Should of been mandatory from the get-go..... I'm pretty sure workplace verification was part of the Ronald Reagan 1986 amnesty but was never implemented so it would work in the real world with an SS# database. IOW employers can legally go through the charade of verifing phony work documents. There is no penalty for doing so.

The new program, however, enables employers to check SSNs and TINs given to them by applicants and employees against the SSA database with an 800 call.

Illegal employers are not going to start *operating legally* simply because they've been *asked* to.
