Animals sensed tsunami in advance
The Times of India ^ | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2004 | Anon

CUDDALORE: Five days after the tsunami wreaked havoc across the coastal region of India, the officials are realising that the number of dead animals - cattle, goats and dogs - in the killer waves are much fewer than perhaps seen in calamities such as cyclones and floods.

"Villagers in this part do not tie their animals. This may have helped them to run away before the waves hit the villages," said an official overseeing the relief work in Cuddalore district.

An interesting theory that is emerging is that the animals sensed the tsunami much in advance and it helped them to run away to safer places.

"My three dogs were barking and howling with no reason at around 7 am on Dec 26. I asked them to keep quiet but they continued barking and were restless," said Fr PA Sampath Kumar of Holy family church at Keezputhupattu about 15 km from Pondicherry.

The first waves of the killer tsunami hit Keezhputhupattu about 8.30 am which was followed by another at 9 am ravaging this fishing village.

"I definitely think that my dogs sensed the tsunami," the priest said.

Interestingly, during the tsunami alert on Thursday, which turned out to be a false alarm, the dogs showed no signs of panic.

"They were absolutely calm as you can see them now," he said and pointed to the three dogs- one a cross breed of British Terrier and two cross breed of Labradors, which were roaming around the church premises, a temporary relief camp now.

The tsunami killed 600 people across 50-55 villages in Cuddalore district and Keezputhupattu. There was hardly any trace of a dead cattle, goat or dogs, said an army jawan involed in removing the debris at the Devanampattinam fishing village where over 100 death were reported.

I would think that any ADULT educated in Modern Western Civilization would remember what causes a Tsunami, even if they were on vacation - - and take appropriate precautions to vacate any coastal regions until the risk had passed...

The uneducated third world ADULTS have an excuse for not realizing the RISK, Westerners really don't, do they?

Animals are very sensitive to changes in the environment and have a keen sense when things are happening.

Your right. I live in a beautiful, uncluttered part of middle Tennessee and ever since word leaked out that walmart was interested in putting up a store down the road from us my dog won't quit barking.

The animal park in Sri Lanka, better known as Ceylon, was apparently hit by the tsunami, but few or no animals were killed.

Leftists are stupid, but in this case there may be something there.

Animals have developed some of the same five senses that humans possess. These highly enhanced senses do not equate to a sixth sense.

There have been many reports of dogs sensing that their owners would experience convulsions in the immediate future. There are reports that dogs can smell certain forms of cancer. I heard a report yesterday that a captain on a charter boat noted the low water levels and an unidentified odor so he packed up and turned tail to port. If the captain could detect such an odor animals with far greater sense of smell should be able to react at far greater distances.

But, we are part of the animal kingdom...why do we not have this 'sixth sense?'

G-d gave animals instinct because they cannot know G-d.

We can know G-d so this is where we get our warnings, our solace, our comfort.

Dogs are particularly sensitive to zoning changes.

I'm an animal who happens to belong to a species known as "homo sapiens."

Agree, we should be listening much more to Him. That was His intentions. That we walk closely to Him. I think we can hear Him, it is just there are so many distractions, so many.

Everyone knows what it feels like to have their kids standing right next to them in the kitchen asking them a question and we still are frustrated and not able to hear what they may be saying to us.... but that's because the radio is on, the tv in the other room is on, the phone is ringing, there are two pots of food on the stove top cooking, the microwave is peeping that it is done, the door bell is wringing, the back door is opening because someone just got home from work for the evening and the rest of the kids are in some other area of the house calling out for you to come and help them with something they need, and oh yea the dog is at the back door whining that he needs to be let out.

You know what's weird? In 1987, we lived in Long Beach, Ca. I never wake a sleeping baby, but for some reason I picked up my 7 day old son, and held him on the couch. 30 seconds later, what became known as the "Whittier Earthquake" struck. When it was done, our interior doors no longer shut. All the interior framing was cockeyed, and everything in the bookcases were smashed and on the floor. A couple of pictures came off the walls.

I don't know why I just picked that baby up out of his bassinet. Weird, huh? This whole thing about the animals, reminded me of this. I totally forgot about that, after all the baby is 17 now :-)

Oh yeah, then why did Noah even bother with that big boat? He could have opted for a nice little holiday cruiser with a few of his closest friends, a blender and some nice island tunes...

According to some scientific articles I've found on the web, animals may have an ability to either hear or sense "infrasound," which is defined as sound with ultra-low frequencies below 16 hertz. Some interesting research by respectable scientists has shown that natural phenomena such as earthquakes, waterfalls, and ocean waves can indeed generate infrasound, which carries for thousands of miles based upon extremely long wavelengths. As sound and infrasound waves travel much faster through water and ground than through the air, animals in the South Asia region may have detected the incoming tsunami, and perhaps even the original earthquake that generated it, and then high-tailed it well inland before the disaster happened. As humans can only hear sound above 20 hertz, the victims were oblivious to the incoming tsumnami. Infrasound has been cited as the reason animals act skittish immediately before earthquakes occur when they can feel the low-frequency noise emanating from the ground before fault-lines shift. At least this is the theory, which does have some serious scientific and physics research behind it.

Actually, I think we do. Have you ever been sitting in a quiet room and then been suddenly aware of a stranger's presence? The human nervous system is no different than that of most other members of the animal kingdom. We become inured to the "status quo" of sensory stimuli around us, and when that status quo is upset, we respond with stress. The only difference between us and the animals is that we've got the rational intelligence to ascribe our discomfort to some other cause, or ignore it completely. The animals don't. The stress makes them jumpy and fearful, and they respond by physiological exertion.

"tied to the full moon, and the particularly strong tidal forces this month."

I've also read about this too...there is probably something truthful about how the moon and tide cause changes and effect the way the environment responds.

I read the Moscow papers yesterday and according to one of their seismologists (per his calculations) he believes the next big earthquake is going to occur in South America.

This is hard for me to comprehend...but there are so many reports of this phenomenon it's hard to ignore.

I recall reading that the Chinese noticed animals' ability to sense coming earthquakes.

I'm sure you posted this article for a discussion on animal senses but this is what really caught my eye. "...during the tsunami alert on Thursday, which turned out to be a false alarm, the dogs showed no signs of panic.

I hadn't read that there had been a false alarm so close to the real thing.
