The Fort hasn't even acknowledged that these are US Prop.
weapons. It's remotely possible that they are perfectly
legal NFA34 registered private weapons, but vastly more
likely the case that they are stolen DOD property.

I'm no expert on the Fort, but the three major weapons
stores there are apt to be:
- Fort active armory inventory
- Fort museum inventory
- Visiting National Guard units inventory

The fact the the base is not on lock-down suggests that
this is not a case of checked-out weapons failing to
return, but deep theft from inventory that no one had
noticed yet.

It's also possible that they came in from somewhere else,
and were being staged for some event. This is less likely,
due to the utter carelessness apparent.

Since one was found above recent ice, I'd guess we can
rule out any involvement by McVeigh or Nichols, prior
to their OKC activities.

CID: Guns Were Not Illegally Missing

From the Daily Union, January 7, 2005

By Saju Ng'alla
The Daily Union

FORT RILEY — The weapons discovered last week in the Milford Lake area were not serviceable and were not illegally missing from any of the military's units, Fort Riley's Criminal Investigation Division reported Thursday.

Special agents with CID said in a press release that preliminary results show that the machine guns were part of a group of weapons that were coded for turn-in and disposal.

Two area residents found two machine guns Dec. 30 near Madison Creek Bridge south of U.S. Highway 77.

Fort Riley's Criminal Investigation Division and the Geary County Sheriff's Department found two other machine guns in that area Dec. 29 after a local fisherman, Charles Allen, found a machine gun on the ice of the creek about 9 a.m. Dec. 29. In all, five machine guns -- an m-240, a 5.56-mm and three 50-mm -- were retrieved from the area Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.

On Thursday CID said that the machine guns were not stolen.

"The weapons had been properly removed from a Fort Riley unit's arms room and property book and were to be turned over to the Directorate of Logistics, the agency responsible for proper disposal," the release said.

Jeff Coverdale, a Fort Riley representative, said a property book is a document that details every item a unit possesses, from bed posts to weapons.

CID said it was investigating how the weapons ended up near Madison Creek Bridge and why they were not turned over for disposal.

Coverdale said CID did not explain how the guns were not "serviceable." Coverdale said "not serviceable" could mean that the guns were old or damaged and, therefore, required to be taken out of Army use and disposed of.

Geary County Sheriff Jim Jensen said Monday that the machine guns were functional but not loaded.

"To me they appeared functional," Jensen said today. "I'm going to stick with that."

Coverdale also said Fort Riley will not now name of the unit from which the guns came because it would compromise the investigation.

CID would not say whether more weapons were missing or in the MIlford Lake area. Coverdale said post officials would like citizens to call local law enforcement officials if they find weapons.

My understanding is that the Clintons ordered *boxcar loads* of priceless match ammo and guns destroyed. Apparently they had several destruction centers set up around the US and had the stuff shipped there by rail from all over the US to be destroyed.

I also heard (this is all hearsay, FWIW) that the military now has to purchase its match ammo from the lowest bidder, and that it is much inferior to the stocks of Lake City Arsenal match ammo which was destroyed. I'm sure that's true of the M14s... AFAIK they were all built by TRW and were also far superior to anything that is currently manufactured.

Thanks, scumbags... I'll be waiting for you both in Hell
