United States President George Bush was tonight accused of trying to undermine the United Nations by setting up a rival coalition to coordinate relief following the Asian tsunami disaster.
The president has announced that the US, Japan, India and Australia would coordinate the worlds response.
But former International Development Secretary Clare Short said that role should be left to the UN.
I think this initiative from America to set up four countries claiming to coordinate sounds like yet another attempt to undermine the UN when it is the best system we have got and the one that needs building up, she said.
Only really the UN can do that job, she told BBC Radio Fours PM programme.
It is the only body that has the moral authority. But it can only do it well if it is backed up by the authority of the great powers.
Ms Short said the coalition countries did not have good records on responding to international disasters.
She said the US was very bad at coordinating with anyone and India had its own problems to deal with.
I dont know what that is about but it sounds very much, I am afraid, like the US trying to have a separate operation and not work with the rest of the world through the UN system, she added.
US out of the UN, UN out of the US
Memo to the Scotsman...Americans don't give a shit about the UN.

Identical thread with over 140 posts!!
Oh yeah, the UN has a great track record when it comes to humanitarian aid...[coughSudanRwandaKosovocough].
More reason why the UN is useless.
I love it! Sometimes Bush can really make me proud.
Hey, give the UN credit. It is the most efficient organization in the world at distributing bribes between participating kleptocracies.
Good!
Pot/kettle alert!
Moral authority???? I wonder what is so moral about an institution that allows its "peacekeepers" to rape children, and steals money meant to buy food. I think that the POWER is giving that corrupt institution the one fingered salute it deserves.
IMHO, this is one of the BEST things GWB has done since he was in office.
I simply cannot believe what a pissing contest this has become with the media, Europe and the UN against America. What the heck is wrong with them! This tragedy has become a donation contest and the media is the biggest instigator of them all!
'Grease my palm, or I'll say bad things about you.'
screw the UN - we'll get the aid there faster, more effectively, and with no graft (which last bit is probably what is irking the UN)
Search is our friend here at FR.
You got that right! Every place the UN goes misery follows.
I would suspect military resources are being primarily used so the chain of command is best left to those countries involved.
Time is critical so it makes sense that the countries affected by the disaster prepare to distribute and we just deliver the goods.
Greenpeace tried to blame this disaster on President Bush and global warming. The peanut gallery really needs to give it a rest.
1.When the paper pushers yell out jump,We say "HOW HIGH".
2.Uncle Sam get's left with the check!
3.the freedom-haters of the world take credit, and we hear how stingy we are.
My answer is "GO GET BENT" But of course you're already doin that in Africa (Aren't You???)
I was just thinking about this today; in my life, I've never seen such sneering vitriol directed at a sitting president so blatantly and in full view of the public.
They have made this tragedy into a money grubbing contest. Those poor people are suffering and the media is counting money like Scrooge!
