"a symbol that has become quite the object of controversy since the original TV series' seven-season run starting in 1979. "
Well, I remember watching the "dukes" quite often, and I was in radio at the time, with full availability to network and teletype news, and I don't remember any controversy at that time. That is not to say it didn't occur, but spending 8 hours a day around an AP teletype machine, and news broadcasts every half-hour, you'd think there would have been some mention of it.
Anyway, I don't think it's so much all the liberals, as it is a small contingent of them with well-placed access to the main stream media.
In fact, most of the "controversies" we hear about are media-sourced and media-amplified. They love to start a controversy, it's ready-made news. And we all know the great percentage of the media is made up of liberals.
This was probably stirred by some pulitzer-pundit seeing the new movie version of "Dukes" and looking for a story. But, they can't hate the Confederate Flag nearly as much as I hate the media.

To liberals, Georgia is Flyover Country. It might as well be on the other side of the moon. Tell y'all the legacy media is gunnin' to be hogtied to hate a movie that puts Red State America in a positive light.

I wonder when exactly the beginning of the "political correctness era" started.
The best guess I have is sometime around the beginning of 1993, when Clinton took over the presidency. Was it then that, just to take one example, Donna Shalala moved from the University of Wisconsin Madison to Secretary of Health and Human Services-- typifying the movement of political correctness from university campuses to mainstream politics? (And perhaps it should also be noted just which Clinton should be attributed the real credit for such appointments?)
