Apparently they built breakwaters around one or more of the larger islands after some floods in the 80's and that helped, but still, when you consider Somalia is twice as far away, is continental and not just low-lying islands, and still had almost twice the death toll, the Maldives did relatively OK.It all depends on the off-shore topography. Diego Garcia was unscathed and it too is no more than a few feet above sea level; but the water deepens quickly off the Island. Tsunamis get destructive where there is continental shelf or gradually shallowing bottom, because the bottom slows the wave down and thus it grows in height in order to conserve energy.

I expected the non-varifiable death toll to go up in proportion to the amount of aid money in the feeding trough. You and me both.

Meek, VKs,
Just a thought here: I understand it is your sacred duty to grind trolls to dust, but on a thread as serious as this I'm reminded of how people acquire hushed voices whilst inside a church.
Perhaps the kitties can have supper quietly in the corner from time to time?

Not all Catholics are Christians... It IS a Christian religion.
But I guess it's safe to say not all professing Christians are genuine Christians.

I've wanted to say this for a few days...
Gee, I wonder how much Bin Laden and Al Qaeda will pledge for relief...????
I REALLY think the Bush Administration should rally on this.
Think about it - what a great way for us to show the world just what kind of group of thugs that they are !!!!!!

How long before the muslims in Indonesia blame the CIA for the tsunami?
Everyone know it was a "Zionist conspiracy"! Didn't you read about Israel's new earth quake technology in Al Jazeerah? /sarc

That is very true. Very well thought out. Nice post.
How about calling into a radio show and pushing that theory?
