That's okay. We decided we didn't need no rescuin' so we got rid of all the ASRs.ASRs were so ooooold. Built mostly when submarines were the WWII variety, not the modern day boomers ;0)

Yeah it is, but if there was a problem at NOB they'd clamp down everything.

Must have been fun. The most fun I had while training was going to a "C" school for the NTDS, and training a longside a bunch of Pakistani sailors from the PNS SUQUAAT (a ship they got from us and renamed etc...) - man, those guys could drink... ;0)

anyone remember back in the early 90s when anyone could enter a Navy base based on the fact that you just want to see the 'cool' ships?
I was shocked at this.
To: Doohickey
wonder if they closed I-526? One of the runways goes right over it. just heard a report on local AM radio. Doesn't sound like a big deal. They have not closed 564 or Hampton Blvd. The bus is at Fleet Rec Park and they've got the FBI, State Police, Norfolk Police and Base Police all on the scene.

One good thing is that TRT doesn't run on any of the other bases in the area...they don't even run the old grey navy buses anymore on base.

anyone remember back in the early 90s when anyone could enter a Navy base based on the fact that you just want to see the 'cool' ships? You can still get on base very easily. Mohammed Atta made 3 or 4 trips on base on the base tour bus. Pictures of him at the base were all over local TV right after 911.

According to FOX or MSNBC (I can't remember), the phone call said there was a "bioweapon" on board.

They used to be especially nice to look at at Christmas time, same with the admirals housing area.

the phone call said there was a "bioweapon" on board. Maybe it's just Hillary's maid taking "Old Crusty" to the cleaners for once?

NORFOLK, Va. Authorities halted two buses Thursday outside the Norfolk Naval Station (search) after an unidentified caller mentioned a bus and warned city police, "a lot of people are going to die."
An undetermined number of passengers were removed from the buses, base spokeswoman Jennifer Carl said.
The buses, which had been en route to the base, were diverted to the nearby Fleet Recreational Park, where authorities searched them for bombs, Carl said.
The caller referred to a Hampton Roads Transit (search) bus and the Navy base early Thursday morning and cited the number 936, she said.
"The caller said, 'A lot of people are going to die,"' Carl said.
Uncertain whether the number was a time or a bus number, authorities at the base gate stopped bus No. 936 and another bus that tried to enter at 9:36 a.m., she said.
The naval station is the largest U.S. naval base anywhere in the world.

At last some meaningful info.
Many thanks.

In the 1980s when I was in, you couldn't get near ANY front gate of ANY military facility without the proper paper work. Then I became a defense contractor and that when I 'discovered' the policy change. Hell, you could even go right down pierside where the subs were.
Relaxing the rules was total insanity.
