Bush 'presumes' U.S. warning system is adequate By Corbett B. Daly Last Updated: 12/29/2004 4:04:35 PM
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- President Bush said he presumes the U.S. warning system for tsunamis and other natural disasters is in working order, but he stopped short of definitively backing the infrastructure currently in place.
"I presume that we are in pretty good shape. I think our location in the world is such that we may be less vulnerable than other parts, but I am not a geologist, as you know," Bush told reporters in Crawford, Texas.
"I can't answer your question specifically: Do we have enough of a warning system for the West Coast? I am now asking that to our agencies and government to let us know," Bush said in response to a question about the U.S. warning system as he made his first public comments since the devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunamis that have so far killed 75,000 people in Asia. What about the East Coast? Do we have a warning system for the East Coast?
If only the people would have elected the brilliant John Francois Kerry, we wouldn't have to put up with this.
Well, obviously Bush doesn't care about America. Insensitive to the core. Why isn't he leading an effort to stop all tsunamis everywhere? Why did he allow the tsunami to hit all those countries?
Was it Bush or Haliburton? Or Both?
Why don't we also get a meteor warning system while we're at it? Sheesh.
Let's see. He has had 9/11, Iraq, the election, homeland security and 1000 other things to be concerned with. I rather doubt that tsunami warnings have been at the top of his list.
Even if we already have effective systems in place, why should he have direct knowledge of them?
We shouldhave a warning system in place. I suspect we do based on some articles I have seen lately, but it is pretty hard to plan ahead for every single eventuality of nature.
That's what comes of all those vacations spent at the Crawford Ranch, instead of studying geology as he should.
Dan
Right, Kerry would have a "plan", of course no one would ever know what it is.
I read a letter to the editor in my local paper where this woman said pretty much that. The administration is spending so much money on war and equipment that we should have bought these poor people tsunami warning devices instead. In effect US and Bush's fault. Sick isn't it?
The Pacific Coast of the US is well-protected by a good warning system. Tsunami warnings or alerts go to all law enforcement and fire officials if there is a need.
I remember at least three tsunami alerts from my time living in a coastal community in central California.
I do not know about the East coast.
Maybe the President was making a fatal mistake; believing major news organization reports.
Maybe it's Rummy's fault, after all he is the Secretary of Defense and I imagine that includes earthquakes/tsunamis etc. /sarc>
It's for your protection...
The Pacific has an underwater tsunami-detection system of six buoys nestled strategically on the ocean floor at depths of up to 18,000 feet. Three of the devices are off the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, one is off Vancouver, British Columbia, one is off Oregon and one is between Hawaii and Chile.
The gauges on the ocean bottom are linked to buoys on the sea surface, which transmit date to a satellite, said Gerard Fryer, a University of Hawaii geophysicist who is also the adviser to the Hawaii Department of Civil Defense.
Two of the three sensors off the Aleutians are currently not working because the surface buoys, which are battered by the rough winter seas, need to be replaced, he said.
Danged lazy media...
It's not that they're lazy, or incapable of doing a 30 second Google search. It's that they want to throw a loaded question at the President in the hopes of him making a mistake or showing ignorance of the system.
With his uncertain answer, they now have the ammunition to go after him for his ignorance and insensitivity - just like they did with Rumsfeld. He obviously doesn't know what is going on in his own Administration, does he?
Bush is an ignorant, uncaring dolt, again!!... plainly outed by our relentlessly efficient and nonpartisan MSM, who, after all, are just trying to get the facts and report the unbiased news to the American People. Just doin' our jobs, Ma'am.
Expect breathless news clips at 6, followed by accusatory editorials in all the Newspapers Of Record!
The East Coast needs a warning system also even if the chance is low their is no need to take a stupid risk.
