Those looks like mountains. What's most interesting to me is how far out the water line receded to.

Yesterday on Fox, they showed satellite images of the beach before the surf pulled away and after the surf pulled away...the exposed sea floor looked like maybe a half mile of dark, shiney gray sand. I have the images and will try to post if they haven't been posted already (I have a hard time finding free image hosting that doesn't expire the pics after a short period of time)

I heard a radio report that cited the story of a Swedish family group printed in
The Washington Post.
I think they were on one of the beaches in Thailand.
The father of the family said that the water seemed to recede about 2000 yards in
"what seemed like 15 seconds", leaving an exposed seabed with flopping fish.
Then the wave rushed in; the family lost a niece in their race to survive, IIRC.
I heard a tsunami expert say that in extreme cases, the receding of the water
(prior to the hit of the wave) can be so far out that a person standing on the beach
will lose sight of water (i.e., recede to the horizon).

read on FR that they receded 300+ meters.
I'm not sure how much time elapsed from the start of the receding to the time the tsumani reached shore. Most people probably would have had enough time to run a few hundred meters/yards to higher ground.

I was thinking the same thing. The women remaining on the beach all look like their hair is wet, I mean just swimming wet so it would seem they were in water and were left on the beach as it receeded. Plus the closest boat seems to be getting air in the engine.

What's most interesting to me is how far out the water line receded to. That is what is amazing to me also.
