Ping!
Didn't old Joe Kennedy make his money running illegal scotch from Canada?
That passes for Proud and potent thinking class now?
I totally agree .. and my tagline says it all.
The word "sophisticated" actually meant "spoiled", before it took its present meaning.
You're blending two Far Side classics together, I believe. The "Bummer of a birthmark, Hal" cartoon featured deer. The other famous image (which, like "Hal", also turned up on t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc.) was the bear, as viewed through a hunter's rifle scope, who is grinning nervously and pointing to the bear next to him. "Shoot him instead!" is the unwritten caption. Both of those are funnier than anything from The New Yorker.
And then there's one of Larson's sickest: In front of a small house, with a rural type mailbox out by the street, a young woman is retrieving the morning paper. The front page reads: "PYTHON ESCAPES ZOO" and to the rear of the house, a large snake is slithering out of a window. The snake has seven large bulges, and the mailbox is stenciled "S. White".
"And the name of the supercilious fop...?"
Eustace Tilley. Cover boy since day one, I think.

With regard to the self-appointed liberal cultural elite, the term "sophomoric" comes to mind.
"...never seen it employed as a screen name...on any site."
Good point. Wherefore art thou, Eustace? Too foppish a name, I guess.
