Like a war - almost like a tropical Stalingrad - the dead - white tourists in their skimpy swimming suits and locals in their traditional clothing, lined up next to each other. Death had no favorites.

Heaven forbid that something as trivial as a tsumani and tens of thousands of dead bodies interrupt one's parasailing experience.

Leave it to the Europeans to sit on the sidelines and let others do what must be done! They've such a long and proud history of inaction.

I NEVER read Der Spiegel here in Germany. It is the consistently most left wing mag in Germany, and responsible for brainwashing the chattering class here for the last 40 years. They kept praising the DDR and communism up to it's collapse, then did an about face and started looking at the mess left over. They are prime Bush bashers, and pro gay, pro Muslim etc. They are the "intellectual" propaganda machine for the socialists and greens.
Der Spiegel is worse than the NYT.

I had a friend from Germany, long ago. She reacted strongly to every
Der Spiegel article that attempted to attack Ronald Reagan in regard to the missiles.
Finally, one day, I asked her, Did it every occur to you, that the Soviets would attack the U.K. and the U.S. first, in order to isolate Germany?
Well, her eyebrows went up on that one; and no, she had never even thought about it. She just read, over and over, that, according to Der Spiegel, she was the target because the missiles were in her back yard and thus she posed a threat.
She never ever considered any other possibility, and on other topics, that required more thinking about what was beyond the socialist menu of the day, Der Spiegel.

Agreed, I too very seldom read the rag. But these pictures of the massive tragedy and destruction of lives and property obliterate any political leaning of the magazine. The pictures are overwhelming. The massive aid and cleanup that is required can only be imagined.
