well spank this guy with a spoon. I have great apprcation for ham operators. If it wasn't for them and the MARS, we wouldn't have been able to "call" home, when we pulled into port, years ago when I was on the boats!
Great Lakes ?
We do Field Day every year so we are prepared to set up an emergency communications station with antennas, generators, the works.
A jet from our local AFRB slammed into a local apartment complex a few years back. 911 and the police and fire bands were so overloaded they simply quit working - nobody's cell phones worked for the same reason. Couple of land line phone calls and our local radio clubs were there with all their equipment - had a base near the crash site, a 2 meter repeater, and individuals with 2m radios at every hospital within 10 miles as well as all local fire stations and precincts. The clubs staffed the equipment on a rotating basis until the police and fire could get their system up again.
What has THIS guy done lately for civil defense/disaster preparedness, other than wring his hands?
