The air guns were adopted to avoid the adverse environmental impacts of firing dynamite charges to get the same readings.

Big oil is now responsible for tectonic plate activity? If those darned Republicans had signed Kyoto and stopped throwing profits to their big oil buddies, Pangea would never have broken up...

The epicenter of this particular quake, caused by the Indo-Aussi plate diving under the European one at a rate of 6cm a year was 6 miles down under the ocean. While theoretically possible in exactly the right area, using exactly the right explosives, it's not bloody likely. This is a planet we live on, not a soap bubble. The region gets hit by major quakes and major tsunamis that kill thousands every few years. These things happen when the surface you live on happens to be floating around on an extremely hot, dense ocean of molten rock.

The effect on the whales is plausible. I think the Navy has actually done studies on this. They know a lot about low frequency noise. But a puff of air or even many puffs of air causing an huge earthquake seems a little far fetched. I do remember the Pakistanis doing an underground nuclear test and then 2-3 weeks later, there was a huge earthquake in Afghanistan. A nuclear bomb is not a puff of air.

Now I don’t claim to be an expert on seismic activity

The article should have stopped right there.

Hey Limburg.........(author).........you dimwit, try to think for just a moment, won't ya?

To suggest that airguns can literally cause tectonic plates to shift is worse than ridiculous; it's jaw-droppingly stupid. I won't even try to discuss with you the concept of "mass" involved here (HINT: any idea how much air pressure.....or noise.....it would take to cause billions and billions of tons of earth and rock to shift? or to make two tectonic plates actually shift? Hell of a lot more than 170 db, slick.........you can get that at yer average rock concert, numbskull).

How about this for starters. Maybe, just maybe, the very geoseismic activities associated with areas where tectonic plates meet would be favorable for identification (or creation?) of undersea oil deposits.

You can't fart at a high rise and knock it down. If you happen to fart at high rise while high-explosive charges are detonated throughout its structure to bring it down, take note: you didn't do it. The explosives did it. Just wanted to let you know to save you the guilt.

Re Post #44

I got a response back from the author today...I laughed so hard.

He told me in no uncertain terms to go "S" off a CEO since I was so "Pro-Business" and if not to go "F" myself....here is my response---

---
Email response to Andrew Limburg

Thank You Andrew for your professional and enlightened response. It isn't so much that I am Pro-Business as much as I would hunger for Truth from the Media, something that many "so-called" journalists have chosen to bury in favor of their own personal agendas. Frequently, these "Activists" have severe psychological issues of unresolved anger and bitterness.

I am so delighted by your verbiage that I am going to post it on FreeRepublic.com, the largest conservative BBS in the world; it has 60,000 members of which I am one. I think the whole world should see what you and your publication are all about.

Of course I will have to edit out some of your more "colorful" language. ;-) Unfortunately, after the edit, there won't be much "intelligence" left.

Warm Regards

Hal Gxxxx

I truely hope I made Andrew's day..... ;-)

Subj: Bagels & lox

Despite the best efforts of our Advanced Propulsion Group, smoked salmon has shown no promise as oxidizer for rocket applications.

When we ordered sixty tons of LOX, we meant Liquid OXygen. Not the other stuff. APG prefers cream cheese.

Bagels are now to be delivered to the chemical stockroom at the back of the facility.
