A large wave approaching at 500 mph probably sounded like an air raid siren to some animals.

Oh, Lordy. Animals do NOT have an "extra sense". They aren't distracted. If we were living as cavemen, we too would "exhibit" that extra sense. As it is, we are distracted by those things of everyday living; instead of constantly watching the skies, smelling the air, observing nature around us.
I'm really fatigued by this "disaster -- animals know (but humans are too stupid to know)" stuff which comes out of the mouths of so-called "intelligent" people. In calm times, I've sensed upcoming quakes sooner than my pets did. I've sensed upcoming thundershowers. It's not about "extra senses". When I'm distracted by work, everyday dramas and requirements? Nah. I don't see 'em coming.

Back in the 70's we had a minor earthquake here in Kentucky. I remember it well because I was underneath my old Chrysler replacing the starter. About a minute or two before the ground started rumbling like a large truck going down the street all the birds quite chirping and singing. It was kind of weird. You can't tell me they did not sense something.

Probably less than that! By the way, Elsie is a very nice name. It has a special place in my heart because my grandma who meant a lot to me was named Elsie.

Wasn't there, also, a full moon during the Sumatra quake? That's supposed to be another common element in large quakes. The former Santa Clara Co. geologist, noted for predicting the World Series quake is Jim Berkland, BTW.

I should have put a smiley on my comment...sorry... :-)
BTW, regarding "when tides went out," a tsunami is *not* a tidal wave, despite common belief. It's a seismic sea wave, not related to tides.
