SAN MATEO, Calif. - Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Computer Inc., was the highest-paid executive in the San Francisco Bay area in 2003, according to a new study.
Jobs received a salary of only $1 in 2003, but he traded in almost all of his stock options for $74.8 million in restricted stock, according to an analysis of 400 publicly traded companies in the Bay Area by San Mateo-based Equilar, which tracks executive compensation.
Other Bay Area CEOs in the top five included John Chambers of Cisco Systems Inc. ($47.7 million), Meg Whitman of eBay Inc. ($42.6 million), Stephen Bennett of Intuit ($29.9 million ) and Craig Conway, formerly of PeopleSoft Inc. ($26.9 million).

Steve Jobs deserves his Apple stock options because he's made the company money. For $1, they should keep him around forever.
I personally don't like Jobs, and when he took over Apple I expected it to kill of the company. But I have to admit, while I still don't like him, he's played his market place like a violin and made a lot of money for Apple.
Jobs totally turned around apple. That mini ipod now is the hottest thing going. I bought 3 or them for my relatives for Christmas and I had to start last month to get them. They freggin` sell out as soon as they hit the stores. Apple stock seems to be on a breather now, but if you bought some shares last August early Sept you could have easily doubled your money.
Yup. That Apple iPod thing is crazy popular. Now, two of my sisters have them. My brother will probably get one, and my third sister wanted one for her husband (who, despite being anti-Apple, might accept it if my sister ever bought him one). Now, I'm not sure if I personally like Steve Jobs or not (like him compared to that airhead currently running HP, my dad's former company), but for people working at Apple, he's a godsend to them.
