LONDON (AFP) - The 14-year-old granddaughter of famous British actor and film director Richard Attenborough has died in the Asian tidal wave disaster, a family friend said, while his daughter and her mother-in-law are missing.
Granddaughter Lucy was among a family group staying the Thai beach resort of Phuket, which was swept by a tidal wave following Sunday's massive undersea quake, said Diana Hawkins, a colleague and friend of the Attenborough family.
Two more of Attenborough's grandchildren, Alice and Sam, were safe.
"Lord (Richard) Attenborough and his wife, Sheila, have lost three members of their immediate family in the tidal wave disaster that hit the beaches of Thailand on Boxing Day morning," said a statement from Hawkins.
"Their elder daughter, Jane, is missing, as is her mother-in-law, Jane Holland.
"The Attenboroughs' granddaughter, Lucy, 14, died at the scene. Another granddaughter, Alice, 17, is now being treated in hospital.
"Two members of the family group survived unscathed. They are the Attenboroughs' son-in-law, Michael Holland, and eldest grandson, Sam."
Attenborough and his family had requested that they be given privacy "at this terrible time", the statement added.
The 81-year-old is one of the most successful actors and directors Britain has ever produced, first finding fame appearing in films such as "Brighton Rock" and "The Great Escape".
As a director, his biggest triumph was "Ghandi", which won eight Oscars (news - web sites), in 1983 including best film and best director.
Attenborough has continued acting, starring in 1993 smash hit "Jurassic Park" as well as its 1997 follow-up, "The Lost World".
Ditto what you said, B.
FYI..to see a truly depressing pic..here's a link to the front page of today's NY Times...so very sad..Death in Thailand
Makes one think of the Titanic tragedy. It didn't matter how much money you had, or what status in society you held...what mattered after the tragedy was, were you on the list of the saved, or the list of the lost?
Thanks!
Very sorry to hear this.
Free Republic? Sounds like censorship to me.
"Free Republic? Sounds like censorship to me."
Don't know what got pulled, but yes, it is censorship. I practice it in my house, too.
I didn't ask for the original dumb comment or my reply to be removed.
You, of course, know that removing posts here is not censorship. Right?
While I feel terrible for Mr. Attenborough,I feel terrible for the families of the other 55,0000 who died there too. Many who dont have a dime and no place to turn.
No, it's keeping order and decorum. Until we grew big, it was a free for all. When we got big, a lot of riff-raff were attracted - still sre.
So we had to put the Mods into play; who by the way, do a hell of a job!
Another celebrity death.
The news tonight reported hundreds of children wandering around without parents or families and nowhere to go. The carnage caused by this disaster is impossible to put into words.
What was so bad about the comment? Was it vulgar?
It's not censorship, this is a non-government entity and a private forum.
If you have issues with that, you can start your own forum and let any and all comments ramble where they will.
It's relatives of a celebrity including a 14 year old girl and it's certainly not made any less tragic by it.
