I would add that as far as sending aid, look carefully at the aid provider and how the aid is going to be delivered (direct, hopefully), and of course watch out for those with a lot of overhead costs.

Ping - repost that list here.

Free Republic alone can probably more than match the contribution of France.

These countries hate us for the most part...it is a tragedy..but let's keep shit in perspective here. We don't need to be issuing blank checks here. I can't wait for the first Al Qaeda attack on our humanitarian aid convoys and choppers....you know it is coming.

(which most people here generally seem to support, including me).

Well then you and "everybody else here" seem to miss the key points.:

1. Nobody, including me, is against aid. It is the format of the aid that is wrong and stupid.

2. Send people or goods--never send cash as our government is doing and as many people are sending to charities.

3. It is naive to think those in need will get this aid. Most cash will be diverted to corrupt leaders and to terrorists.

4. Here is the key--why should our government add to more welfare? Why not take this 35 million (or whatever it ends up being) out of the $1.1 trillion we spend on social welfare in fiscal year 2004? Divert current welfare spending to these terrorist nations--don't add to the sum total!

It is stupid and it is wrong to continue mismanaging American taxpayers' dollars.

"Did you UN attack them as stingy?"

The initial commitment as stated in the article was
US: 15 million
EU: 4 million

Stingy?
The bidding is now
US: 35 million
EU: 40 million

I'm not impressed considering they have a LARGER combined economy than ours. Plus they have all this extra money lying around that they saved by not going into Iraq.

Stingy? You bet!

Here is how stingy we are

1) I don't think you read my second comment
2) Most of the people around here are NOT missing points...don't get that upset that you are in the minority...doesn't make you right or wrong

Upset? Ha! I would NEVER want to think the way the majority does since they are not rational.

It is always better to be in the minority. Most people fail to see the BIG picture and make a decision on ALL the facts regarding an issue--just like you and the "majority" are doing.

You seem to see no problem that we can't afford the F-22 to defend America, but we can afford global welfare. How unpatriotic of you. You would rather see your family and fellow Americans die than not send some global terrorists tsunami money.

Shameful.

Good luck to you...you'll need it. I will waste no more time with you.

I've probably missed a whole lot of details in the current aid situation.

But, when I heard we were sending aid I never believed we would be sending "cash". It would be appropriate services like aircraft, personnel, food, water, medical and other necessities.

The UN mentioned money, President Bush mentioned appropriate aid.

Much foreign aid is in cash. Cash goes to the PLO, Pakistan, Yemen, Iran, you name it, all the terrorist organizations get cash.

The U.S. is the major funder of the World Bank, IMF, et al. When Yemen gets a $500 million "loan" to build a plant, we don't send them a sewage plant. They receive cash to build the plant. That cash is then given to the top officials in Yemen who are corrupt and the money then gets in the hands of terrorists.

I say "loan" because the U.S. ends up canceling "loans" and canceling other debt to these nations--we never get the money back.

In the case of disaster relief, why did the people in Florida receive 30 year low interest loans from the SBA but we give $35 million (will be much more) in cash to the foreigners?

Yes, supplies and physical goods are sent, but cash is also sent because "only the local corrupt governments can decide how best to distribute the money." Why send Campbell's Pork and Beans when their culture does not allow them to eat pork? Why send them plywood to rebuild homes when their homes are made of mud and leaves? You know the deal there.

My biggest complaint is how aid is funded. It is criminal that we have a $2.2 trillion budget and over $1 trillion goes to social welfare.

We should budget "X" dollars for welfare. Included in that should be a "Contingency Fund" that global and domestic disaster relief comes out of. If that fund is exceeded, then Social Security checks are reduced, aid to dependent children is reduced, etc. To think we can't pull $35 million or even $1 billion out of a $1 trillion dollar welfare budget is ludicrous.

Again, any American who accepts the fact that we can;t afford the F-22 but we CAN afford to give money to foreigners is unpatriotic or insane--take your choice.
