LONDON (AFP) - Former US president Bill Clinton (news - web sites) urged a coordinated effort to provide relief to the countries stricken by the tidal wave that killed tens of thousands across South Asia.
"It is really important that somebody take the lead in this," he told BBC Radio 4's Today program.
"I think one of the problems is when everybody takes responsibility it's almost like no one's responsibility."
Clinton said individual countries should target aid at specific areas.
"Maybe what we should do is get countries or groups of countries to take responsibility for specific countries that were hurt," he said.
"I think if you did that you would have a better chance of seeing responsibilities fulfilled even when the emotional tug wanes."
The United Nations (news - web sites) on Monday said that the biggest disaster relief operation ever staged would be needed for the Asian tsunami (sea surge) victims as medicines and other emergency supplies started pouring into the worst-hit areas.
UN disaster relief coordinator Jan Egeland said the cost of the devastation will be in the "billions of dollars".
I guess he couldn't resist in putting his in 2 cents huh?
Well, I for one am glad that Clinton came out and said this, because now people and nations will actually start to help out...
Thanks, Bill, for caring!
Thank you Captain "Well DUH".

Can Carter be far behind?
No kidding.
Thanks for pointing out the obvious, Bill. Always one to jump in front of a parade, aren't you?
Good grief, who cares what Bubba has to say. He is irrelevent.
If I were Kofi, I'd.....
The sociopath just couldn't resist injecting himself into the story. I don't give a damn what former felon-in-chief Clinton has to say about anything.
Clinton should get assigned to Phuket.
Then, someone should whack his Phi Phi...
Nah. I'd bet money that the MSM's mantra of "WWWJCD" is in play here (What Would William Jefferson Clinton Do?"
Clinton was probably off trolling for tail when some "intrepid" journalist asked him about it.
APf
He fancies himself the President of the World.
Well, he was fairly good at coordinating oral office activities with Monica...
"Me! ME!!! Look at MEEEEEEEEEE!"
Why isn't the Impeached One taking the first plane to Sri Lanka, rolling up his sleeves and helping out himself?
As usual, it'll be the US along with a few other Christian nations shouldering all the burden, with the libs and the UN throwing insults. It's been this way for a lot of decades.
Will we get a story on what Gerald Ford or GHW Bush think?
