Verse awaits OK to move into Contra Costa residence

Four-time convicted sex offender Cary Verse is waiting for a landlord to finish renovations on a Contra Costa County dwelling that a state agency has found, a county prosecutor said Monday.

County Superior Court Judge John Minney postponed announcing the residence's location. He set the next hearing for Jan. 14.

Renovations may be one of several factors delaying a final decision, said deputy district attorney Brian Hayes. The prosecutor and defense attorneys would not comment on whether the landlord has signed a lease or whether Verse would be in a house or an apartment.

Minney ruled in September that a new state law requires sexually violent predators such as Verse to return to the county where they lived before their arrest. He is the first offender to whom the law has been applied.

"I'm hopefully setting an example for those behind me," Verse said after Monday's hearing.

Verse, 34, lived in Richmond for a month before his 1992 arrest. That was enough time for Contra Costa County to be considered his "domicile," Minney said.

He has lived in a San Jose motel for nine months while the California Department of Mental Health has sought a location for him. He looks forward to the final announcement.

"There is definitely some anxiety (in waiting)," Verse said. "I'm learning about the justice system. It's slow, but it works."

Verse's attorney Ron Boyer said that he will feel certain about the home only after the judge's announcement.

Verse "has been looking for a place since February," Boyer said. "It's hard for me to feel like there's something definite until there's something definite."

"Renovations may be one of several factors delaying a final decision"

One renovation that I think would really spruce up the place is a wood chipper. I would place it tastefully outside the back door with a nice country/primitive type sign that informs him that this will be his next home if he "gives in" to his cravings again. On second thought, he WILL do it again so just throw the pervert in, feet first.

East-Bay Alert!

There probably would've been a welcoming committee for this guy if he moved to the city... if he could afford to live here...
