somewhere near the exotic island of Phuket. Ok, wots up with that name? Was it invented by some junior high boys or wot?

Actually, the "h" is silent, so you say "Pooh Ket".
But that's bad news for the island of Phi Phi (pronounced "pee pee")

I heard a BBC reporter pronounce it "Foo Ket".

Either way, you have to dance around the phonetics.
