I didn't see anything about exterminating anyone either, I think that statement/accusation probably tells us more about the indivual who made it, than it does about anyone else.
A city, a territory, a country can be 'reclaimed' in more ways than one...just ask the citizens of the former USSR. Or Afghanistan, or Iraq come January, or Iran when the mullah's get their come-uppance.

Okay, describe your alternative. The inhabitants of Alexandria and Istanbul currently govern themselves, unlike the examples you cited. The Istanbullus are citizens of a functioning democracy. How do you propose that we "reclaim" them? You mention "more ways than one"... just a couple examples would suffice.
