NAIROBI, Kenya Hundreds of people died and entire villages and towns disappeared when tidal waves hit Somalia's coastline along its central and northeastern regions, a Somali presidential spokesman said Monday.
The waves, which hit on Sunday, were triggered by the 9.0-magnitude undersea quake centered off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles) away.

Tough $hit......
I suppose we should send food and aid.
Been there and done that.
Anyhow, the US military already does cooperate with the quasi-government in Hargeisa, Somaliland, as part of the pan-Sahel initiative based out of neighboring Djibouti. Somaliland is doing much better than the rest of the country. It's possible to book flights from NYC/Hargeisa via Amsterdam, I think. Several hundred western expats live there.
Mogadishu is as far from Somaliland as Houston is from Mexico City.
It's OK -- we understand. You took your wife Christmas shopping, and she said she'd be out in five minutes.
We all have sadness but with places like Somalia, we really don't care. If we did care, we wouldn't ignore the thousands that are starving to death due to government programs. But there is nothing we can do about it so we just ignore it.
I think a healthy mix of respect and fear of known dangers is in order. For instance, if the tsunami sirens go off while we're in port in Unalaska, it's time to race up the mountain. Sticking around and gawking at the outgoing tide is indeed something to be feared.
LOL , or "I'll be down in 5 minutes, warm up the car.."
That's true. I can't argue with you there. Maybe our sadness is selfish. I mean, we can't really empathize living and dying like they do through government oppression, but we can empathize dying from some kind of natural disaster that we have no control over. I know here in San Diego there's always the threat of an earthquake, and geez, up until today I really never even thought about a Tsunami!
Maybe a few of those were some of those scumbags who killed and mutilated our soldiers?
Why would those people be working as fishermen? The men with guns in Somalia almost exclusively work as bodyguards or soldiers.
