quake: 'The water kept rising -- and rising'

AMBALANGODA, SRI LANKA -- The twisted limbs of the frail girl in a blue dress were caught in a garden fence by the sea. She may have been dead already, but no one stopped to check. There was too much tragedy going on all around, as the water kept coming.

Before the waves hit southern Sri Lanka, I had gone to the seaside to drop off my parents at the shrine in Ambalangoda for a Buddhist ceremony. Sunday was the "Poya," or a full-moon day. We Buddhists believe that Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and died on a full-moon day, so they are a time for reflection.

As I was driving back to the capital, Colombo, I got a message on my cell phone that some parts of coastal Sri Lanka had been hit by unnaturally big waves.

I didn't need the message. People were running everywhere, and the first waves hit the road. They were not huge, not too destructive. They brought fish to the shore, and people rushed to collect them.

The couple running along the beach on vacation is a sample of really bad advertisement placement with this article.

yes, I moved this picture yesterday, originally in color, and didn't think it illustrated it as well, even though the shooter was the one who was telling the story, so out of respect, I let it fly along with the text.

No, it's you and the other callous clods on this thread that don't get it. Many of us know people who have been affected by this tragedy and are greatly offended by it's use as a vehicle for your long tired joke. Although I doubt your capacity for empathy or remorse based on your statements in this thread, I recommend greater sensitivity in the face of mass human tragedies as a most basic rule for interpersonal communications. If you do posses any basic human decency, please leave this thread and stay away from those like it until the dead have been buried.

An Indian man cries as he holds the hand of his eight-year-old son, who was killed in a tsunami in Cuddalore, southern India, December 27, 2004. The death toll in a tsunami that slammed into coasts from India to Indonesia topped 22,000 as rescuers scoured the sea for missing tourists and fears of disease grew as soldiers raced to recover rotting bodies. Get what? that some 23,000 people are dead? Here's some numbers not even including those that live there (and this was 3 hours ago)
Britain: 11 dead, many missing and at least 69 being treated in hospitals
Italy: 13 dead, many missing and dozens being treated in hospitals
Norway: 10 dead
Sweden: Nine dead, hundreds unaccounted for
United States: Eight dead
Denmark: Three dead
France: Six dead
Australia: Two dead
Belgium: Two dead
South Africa: Two dead
Finland: One dead
New Zealand: One dead, about 180 reported missing
Malaysia: Unconfirmed reports of three dead
South Korea: Unconfirmed report of one dead
Switzerland: Unconfirmed report of one dead, 41 missing
Poland: Media reports say one likely dead, three hospitalized and about a dozen unaccounted for
Japan: Media report 15 bodies found in Sri Lanka appear to be those of Japanese
Russia: Up to 120 reported missing
Turkey: Foreign ministry says it's unable to reach 23 Turks; media report at least 15 missing
The Netherlands: 19 confirmed missing, 53 confirmed injured
Spain: 12 confirmed hospitalized
Portugal: Three confirmed missing, two confirmed hospitalized
Czech Republic: Many reported missing, at least five injured

Now, what is it that you don't get? I'm just giving respect and praying for them

I looked at your sign up date. That's why I said what I did. You'll figure it out if you stay here long enough. If I offended you, you'd better get a thicker skin.

I also don't believe I deserve your sharp tone.

Calm down.

What a truly horrible sight.

No defense at all.

I pray for the families of those people, there and all over the world.

I am trying even harder to do what is right and best in my own life today, because I am blessed with having the opportunity to do so. The local survivors will need a lot of help in coming days...and it will be revealing to see who does what. We spend so much time and effort being cruel to eachother on this planet, and forget how thin the "silver cord" may be for each of us, at this very moment.

This is a present reminder of what "Christmas" is really all about. Let us not forget, and all do our best to help the victims of unwarranted violence, everywhere. Too bad we in the U.S. were so visited with such violence from our fellow man, or we would have more money and resources at hand to help others too, without compromising our own safety any more than it already is.

Oh. I guess I really don't get it then. Sorry. I don't even know what a "sign update" is since this is my first day in here. If you want me to "get it", please explain. Since I was thinking about victims of this disaster, I figured you'd be commenting on that and not something irrelevant.

Beautifully put. I had no idea what was meant by the "silver cord" was before your post (Ecclesiastes 12:6-7).

Put your cursor over your name on anyof your posts and hold it for a sec. A date will pop up. That is that date that you signed on to FR. That is how I already knew this was your first day.

The fact that everything that is bad or goes wrong in the world is W's fault is not "irrelevant". We like to always point it out before the DUmmies come in and do it for us.

You'll have to learn about DUmmies. Stick around.
