The Tsunami Videos - One Year Later

I was looking back through Wizbang's video posts from the weeks after December 26, 2004 at the collection of tsunami videos we published. It's perhaps not surprising that many of the sites that hosted videos are no longer active (or even available). Wizbang's collection is still there, without a broken link (to my knowledge) in the bunch.

It's hard to believe that nearly one year ago a quarter million people died in a matter of hours. A look through the Wizbang Tsunami Archive is all it takes to refresh your memory to the horror of that day.

Stunning tsunami video from Aceh, Indonesia. Watch The Video (AP Story)

Filmed by Bavarian tourists who were at Patong Beach in Thailand filming from a balcony as 3 waves coming in. The dramatic part of the video is that there is a woman walking on the street prior to the surge of the incoming waves. Download (16 MB) . Right click "Save As" to save the video to your computer.

Wes Roth sends a link to a Norwegian site that features an incredible 12MB amateur video of the tsunami hitting a seaside restaurant. That page is under heavy load, so you're better off getting the video via this Direct Video Link. Right click "Save As" to save the video to your computer.

Simply the most amazing video of the tsunami I've yet seen (11MB AVI). It's a miracle the cameraman (or woman) is alive. Filmed in Koh Lanta, Thailand

A Third of UN Tsunami Relief Wasted

One year after the tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean, UPI reports that about a third of the relief money collected by the United Nations never reached the victims: Overheads take up to 1/3 of tsunami funds. (Hat tip: Riding Sun.)  link: 80 comments

Tsunami: Wave Of Silence

Remember this? (Dec.31, 2004); United States President George Bush was tonight accused of trying to undermine the United Nations... The Diplomad was posted in Indonesia at the time, and deconstructing the self-congratulatory press releases coming out of the UN as fast as they were issued. "Up until just about four or five days ago, except for the disaster tourists such as Annan and Bellamy, the UN WAS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN -- except quite overwhelmingly in Jakarta's luxury hotels, a few UNocrats in Medan, and a tiny handful at the airport in Aceh writing up press releases claiming all the credit for the UN and bad-mouthing the hard-working Aussies and Americans."

It wasn't just the UN putting on a false front. For all the video wave replays, back-patting of the "generousity of Canadians" and uncritical coverage of Paul Martin's photo op fiasco in Sri Lanka, the tsunami aid story has received precious little followup in Canadian media. It wasn't until May that we learned that only $50,000 of the $425 million pledged had actually left Ottawa.

Now, the Financial Times has released results of an investigation into how the UN vacuumed up tsunami aid dollars;

Shades of CIDA.

Of course, this is the same "media community" who have remained virtually silent on Liberal party connections to the UN Oil-For-Food scandal.

Is the silence because they simply don't know - or because they know too much?

"Quake Money" Used for UK Plot

Pakistan’s Daily Times ( a paper that’s been known to publish jihadi screeds) reports that an Islamic “charity” organization transferred “a huge amount” of money to the UK terror plotters—and called it “earthquake relief:” ‘Quake money’ used to finance UK plane bombing plot.

KARACHI: A UK-based Islamic charity organisation remitted a huge amount of money to three individuals in three different bank accounts in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, in December last year with the sole purpose of helping its recipients and their organisations carry out the aircraft bombing plan in the UK, insider sources told Daily Times yesterday.

An investigation carried out by Daily Times showed that Muslim Charity of UK remitted not so long ago a huge amount of money under the head of “earthquake relief” to the accounts of three individuals in three different banks — Saudi Pak Bank, Standard Chartered and Habib Bank Ltd. One of these banks is UK based and has its presence in Azad Kashmir because of a huge number of British citizens of Kashmir origin in UK. The money was transferred from UK to banks in Azad Kashmir through Barclays Plc..

Two of the recipients of the transaction are British citizens of Kashmir origin while the third is an Islamabad-based builder, also of Kashmir origin. They were arrested in the last two weeks at three different places in the country. One of them was arrested in Karachi, the “builder” was arrested in Islamabad while the place of the arrest of the third suspect is still not known. There are no available details about these three suspects with regard to their links with organisations such as Al Qaeda or Lashkar-e-Taiba or both.
