Read this:
Can you spell "Son of Oil for Food Ripoff?"
UN chief to oversee tsunami relief -- This is all an attempt to make Bush and the U.S. look bad.
Cronies ran to the mics to beat Bush in propaganda of "caring". The media ran stories on Bush and Blair vacations. Now here comes good ol' Kofi OFF OF HIS VACATION so he can micromanage what was begun in his absence.

"Does anyone think these numbers are exaggerated? After all, they are now had a 10 fold increase in the number of deaths."
The story quotes a government official saying that a city of 150,000 has virtually disappeared. Another city of 80,000 was wiped out; the figures may indeed be realistic.
Bush 'Undermining UN with Aid Coalition' -- The only good thing that may come out of this horrible disaster is that the UN may self-destruct. We need to help this process by demanding that our representatives initiate action to stop funding the UN, withdraw from the UN and throw them out of the country.
Franklin Graham's
Samaritan's Purse was WAY ahead of the pack on calling attention to the genocide in Sudan.

DoD Tsunami Disaster Relief -- While the dems are whining and sniveling, our military, who are almost alone in Iraq thanks to the cowards of old Europe, move once more into the breech.

Odious tsunami politics (U.N. inserts sizable foot in mouth) -- So they gin up the disaster. They don't beg. They shamelessly DEMAND funding, as they call it. And they're going to pocket most of it, and dole a bit out in country. This is how these people make money. There is no audit, no concern about where the millions are going. No one cares six months after the fact how the money was spent, and specifically on what. They're home free. It's just one big international grift, ghoulishly feeding off the thousands who died in this horrible disaster!

No one gives more than U.S. -- President George Bush, also miffed at Egeland's remark, said the U.S.'s $2.4 billion in disaster relief last year was "40% of all relief aid given in the world."

These east-asian countries have known about the dangers of a massive tsunami for years. Japan and Hawaii have set up a system for evacuating it's citizens to higher ground.
I heard that they didn't feel that it warranted the cost... and might scare-off tourists.
Just look back to our own Johnstown Flood where greed put off dam improvements to maintain the superb fishing at a resort lake.

Tourists try to rush to safety before the tsunami hit the Hat Rai Lay Beach in Thailand. The water had
receded before the deadly wave struck.

The waves travel at 500 mph. it couldn't have taken long to cross that bit of ocean.

This link shows the USGS world map of earthquake activity. The Pacific Rim has really been shaking this year. Living in San Diego .. it's beginning to make me real nervous.
However .. to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord .. so I'm not in despair over what may happen.

Energy is NOT measured in watts. Energy is measured in joules. Watts measure power. Power is the rate at which enegy is converted to another form. Therefore, watts are joules per second. A joule is also the same as 1 watt second. You buy energy from electric utilities, not power. We call them "power plants" but they aren't. They are energy conversion plants. You can't buy power. Power just tells how much energy you are using each second (day, month, etc.). Power is to energy as speed is to distance. Power and speed are time rates of change.
Your electric energy usage is measured in kWh (killowatt hours). When converted to watt seconds or joules, we get 1 kWh = 3.6 million joules. Say a US family uses 1000 kWh of energy per month, which comes out to about 3.6 billion joules. IF this quake released 2 x 10^18 joules as someone stated, it could support 50 million US familes for about a year if its energy could all be convert to electrical energy.
