Today's shallow, thrust-type earthquake occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra at the interface between the India and Burma plates. In this region, the Burma plate is characterized by significant strain partitioning due to oblique convergence of the India and Australia plates to the west and the Sunda and Eurasian plates to the east. Off the west coast of northern Sumatra, the India plate is moving in a northeastward direction at about 5 cm per year relative to the Burma plate. Preliminary locations of larger aftershocks following today's earthquake show that approximately 1000 km of the plate boundary slipped as a result of the earthquake. Aftershocks are distributed along much of the shallow plate boundary between northern Sumatra (approximately 3 degrees north) to near Andaman Island (at about 14 degrees north). |
Actually, BION, Coast to Coast is 97% of the time too far out for my bother.
I wonder if the Illois believe in karma?
Sorry, I missed the context. But now that you bring it up, how can you be sure it's NOT?
that's all right, no worries.
But now that you bring it up, how can you be sure it's NOT?
did you interpret the shuttle disaster (in which a jew died over palestine, tx) as god's message to the judeo-christian world? of course not. and may I suggest that to imply such things is very non-christian in my opinion?
Yep...
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2004/KB_prediction.html
It's the group of Vladimir Keilis-Borok.
They had apparently been successful in "predicting" the Hokkaido quake of 2003 and the San Simeon California quake last year, but their predictions were very "vague" in the sense that both quakes had a good chance of happening by dumb luck.
Their next prediction was the one for Southern California, which failed. The window closed on September 5th.
It's extremely likely that the previous successful predictions by the group were simply "dumb luck."
Hmmmm.
On reflection, I thought there was a quake that qualified regarding the Sept deadline. Wasn't there one out in the Mojave desert in that time frame?
Certainly you could be right, for all I know.
What's the situation in North Thailand, if you know.
My sister-in-law's brother lives there.
"I am guessing by it's shape DG is a former volcano "top" and so does NOT have the shallow waters to set up the "hit".. I did read earlier on another thread how the tidal waves are very regular wave like in the open sea."
The shape is more indicative of an atoll, which means it's a coral reef formation, not volcanic.
Wouldn't your sister in law's brother be your brother in law?
(Cue the music!) I'm my own grampa...
Diego Garcia is a living coral atoll; the coral reefs and island are made up of trillions of living organisms. Once an ancient volcano, all that is left is the atoll surrounding a central lagoon. Thanks to its tropical location and heavy rainfall, the island is heavily vegetated with coconut palm and ironwood trees.
Other than the fact that both incidents were tragic, I see no comparison. This analogy says nothing to me. And furthermore, my interpretation of these events does nothing to solve questions of their "meaning" or origin, if there is one.
well, in that case, I can't say for sure that it wasn't a message from the eyebrow crabs of the vixens of pluto directed at the mooninites. which makes that, and the "quake as a message to muslims" tripe, equally likely in my rational worldview.
Massive 8.5 quake rocks Southeast Asia, triggers tidal waves

I just recieved an email from my son who is stationed at Diego Garcia, according to him they didnt even feel the quake, and no sign of any waves coming their way. He was talking more about what a great meal they were fed on Christmas then what was going on elsewhere. Which was FINE with me!
An Air force mom!
Wow! How great to hear! Thanks for posting the post, Ernest!
WONDERFUL. SO ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.
THANKS MUCH for sharing this with us.
The wave would have already hit them by now if it were going to, right?
You have to have shallows, and then a blockage with no where for the water to go. It can flow around the island.
Great news amid so much tragedy!
