The hippies just wanted to be left alone to "do their own thing." And that was the bottom line of the militia movement as well. IOW, both groups stood for limited governmental interference. That's sort of simplistic, I know, and there's no way they would ever have worked together. I've been a member of each group (not at the same time!) and found the similarities fascinating.
