This should give you a good idea of what is going on. I was in Ao Nang, Krabi a few weeks ago, looks like they got hit, but not as bad as Patong and Karon beaches in Phuket, where I've spent lots of time.
Pray for the survivors...

The BBC boards are always interesting when calamities occur.

Its pretty tough to see a place I love destroyed. Reminds me of when the Sari Club got blown up in Bali, it could have been me then as well.
The Thai people are the nicest, happiest people I've met, I can't believe this happened.

The Crown Prince is missing? How awful.
This is just terrible.
CS, do you have a good map I can use as reference; I hate to admit it, but I'm ignorant of the geography over there.

I hadn't heard about the crown prince, but a grandson of King Bhumipol is missing. Here is Phuket, east of the island is Phi Phi and east of that is Krabi.

If you look at the bottom of the map on the left side where it says Kata Noi beach, that is where this picture was taken, looking due north at the beaches.

I was in Phuket last year at Thanksgiving, this Thanksgiving, I was in Krabi, on the other side of the map, to the left. It got hit pretty bad, but not as bad as Phuket. Phi Phi is a small set of islands halfway between Phuket and Krabi, where they filmed "The Beach".

It all depends on the direction of the wave, some of those islands beaches faced away from the wave, but the main front part of Phi Phi got hit square on.

Here is a wider map, showing Krabi and Phuket, I've dived all throughout the area between the two.
