It's not a military question but a political one.

No, it's a human one. And we are falling short.

Clinton failed Rwanda miserably, and people should know about that. (After all, it was only the Christians being slaughtered, right?)

As for now, I don't know how much we're doing or can do given the Iraq and Afghanistan operations. I hope we're not going to fail the region all over again.

If I was a foreigner, and wanted to frame an argument against United States Supremacy, it would be the example of mismanagement above that would be a forefront example of why one nation should never wield the Power the United States does.

We guarded ourselves from this horrible Ideology of "leftism" in the last election. But any nation, or group of nations should never rely on another's for their own defense, exporting democracy is our best gift to the world.

Don't think for a minute anything out of Hollywood will portray the TRUTH about Clinton's position in this. After all is said and done, it will be 100% piled on Bush and the Republicans - mark my word.

Go cry on the UN's shoulder. Tell them to get off their asses and pass a resolution, the one we've already offered but been turned down on. Explain to me why we should take infinite crap from all the holier than thou jerks who refuse to believe we've done a good thing by taking out a mass murderer in Iraq by taking out some more human debris in Sudan.

I'm more than willing to let the liberals have their way on this one. We go to the UN and present our case. Then we wait 'til hell freezes over waiting on those corrupt third world bureaucratic jerkoffs to do something. End of rant.

"We" are not falling short - the UN is.

You may disagree with the US having an interest in mid-East countries like Iraq, but after 9/11 the issue is at least arguable.

We have no interest in what's going on in Africa, except a humane one. Colin Powell has tried diplomacy, but without some UN involvement there's not much we can (or, IMO, should) do. That's where unilateralism goes bad.

I have no doubt that we'd support a UN effort. But it would have to be generally recognised as a UN effort.

"Go cry on the UN's shoulder....."

How about you go suck an egg.

"Explain to me why we should take infinite crap from all the holier than thou jerks who refuse to believe we've done a good thing by taking out a mass murderer in Iraq by taking out some more human debris in Sudan."

Because innocents are being slaughtered wholesale and we can stop it.

It seems as though some here want to have it both ways by blaming Clinton and the UN (rightly so) for doing nothing but at the same time saying we're justified by sitting on our hands this time. If in 2010 someone makes a film about Bush doing nothing while the Sudan butchered its own people will you go see it?

We are either a moral people or we are not.

""We" are not falling short - the UN is."

If we can stop it but don't then we are falling short. We have rightly declared the UN to be corrupt and ineffective. It would be less than honorable to now wait for them to act and to use their inaction as an excuse for ours.

"You may disagree with the US having an interest in mid-East countries like Iraq, but after 9/11 the issue is at least arguable."

Where the heck are you getting that from? Certainly not anything I've ever written.

"We have no interest in what's going on in Africa, except a humane one..."

Exactly the same interest that we had in Rwanda. Using this statement as an argument of logic Clinton was right to let the Rwanda slaughter go unchallenged.

We're the "big guys". We can do anything we want. But that doesn't mean that we should.
The UN is being revealed as a failing institution. Maybe it should be dissolved. But that doesn't mean that the US should act unilaterally where it has no interest.

clinton should have tried to pressure the UN to solve the Rwanda problem. He didn't. We lost years by that neglect. But that doesn't mean that trying to work through the UN is wrong now.

If I recall the Frontline Rwanda anniversary piece, the slaughter was encouraged by Clinton turning tail in Somalia.

Hence, Hutus murdered a dozen or two Belgian "peacekeepers" to scare the UN out. The Belgians wanted to
turn tail and run, but needed an excuse to withdraw without "looking" like they were chased out with
their tails between their legs.

The US, ie, the Clinton Administration somehow provided the umbrella. I don't remember the exact details.

Anyway, Foggy Bottom was involved, the Pentagon dragged the heels on even providing some old equipment,
probably after being stabbed in the back by Clinton & Co. in Somalia.

As much I fault Clinton for Rwanda, the real villain in the whole Rwanda mess was Francois Mitterand.

But...but...Clinton did go to Rwanda (for a whole 45 minutes) to apologize.

Children are being slaughtered or abused all over the world. America alone can't stop it.
The idealists who formed the UN thought they were going to stop it. They didn't.

American gov't has the purpose of protecting Americans. Americans also want to protect the poor and helpless everywhere else - but we can't do it alone.

We already asked the UN to do something. We already caught holy hell for dissing the UN in Iraq. Frankly I don't think our govt. should take the heat again. There are tyrants all over the world. When does your compassion for everyone but the US soldier stop?
