I have a Sirius radio and I love it... None of the music channels have commercials. FOX News, BBC, Weather channel, are all on there.
That's the thing - XM already has advertising on some of its music channels. They've always had it. Sirius hasn't.
Read the book & saw the movie...agree with you re not living up to the hype. Used to enjoy the show, but it went downhill (or I went uphill ;-) over the last ~ 10 years & when he went off on Pres. Bush, that was the last straw.
How could I possibly forget that scene?:)

Sleeze or sedition... I think they are linked..
The sleeze is a diversion from the real airwave oversight..
Like Monica Lewinsky was a diversion from Clintons more heinous and REAL CRIMES against the nation(public).. JUST so, airwave sleeze is a diversion from the REAL RAPE of the airwaves.. The FCC is BLOCKING real oversight of the airwaves NOT monitoring it.. With a 300 million dollar budget(2004) the FCC could do their job. Instead they are a blockage to real oversight BY their diversion... The FCC is in WORSE shape than the FDA... much worse.. The drug companys literally OWN the FDA.. and the MSM literally OWNS the FCC...
ALL that WITH a Republican House, Senate and Executive Branch(the President) wringing their hands over National Security and won't even close the borders. The airwaves obviously are not important either.. They(the republican party) has been busy proving that they are irrelevant.. The Iraq War, you know, is a diversion too.. Proof ?... The borders are still wide open, and I mean WIDE OPEN.. The Iraq War is a diversion.. From WHAT.?.
Yeah!... from WHAT... Our pockets are being picked.. If they have been picked ALREADY...
OTOH, he's trying to make himself appear to be a martyr to motivate his listeners to switch to Sirius.
Call him what you will, but Stern is no dummy when it comes to making money.
I got news for all you satellite radio fans who are there to avoid the noise and chatter of commercials. XM and Sirius are both COMMERICIAL ventures - that means they have owners and STOCK HOLDERS who expect a PROFIT which means REVENUE has to exceed EXPENSES. How long do you think your upfront fee plus monthly rentals will generate enough revenue to provide a comfortable return. Even PBS has 'commercials' only they call them fundraisers and 'SPONSERS'. Have fun while it lasts.

I feel the same way. I subscribed to Sirius in August and blissfully haven't listened to the wasteland that is FM since. Not that it matters to me about Howard Stern. I subscribe for the music. Just knowing the title and artist of who you are listening to is pretty cool. That way if I like the music, I can purchase it online and have it on my MP3 player.
Like it or not, satellite radio is going to put broadcast radio out of business. The constant blitz of advertisements, the inane DJ/shock jock chatter, the useless traffic and weather reports and the hopelessly limited and lame music playlists that are found on FM radio are going to kill their business model. Satellite radio utterly and absolutely blows away broadcast radio. Within 5 minutes of Sirius, I was hooked. It costs me $9.95 but I would pay $100 a month for it before going back to broadcast.
I think not. Rap is the absolute nadir of the airwaves.
But for him to claim that his show is a valuable contribution to our culture or society is ridiculous.

I have both... IF you are a NFL fan get Sirius... They are both good I listen to XM more only because I'm around it more they are both good on Sundays the Sirius gets alot of play...
Commercials? Bring 'em on. Makes no difference to me. What does make a difference is escaping the Nanny-Staters who want to dictate what I can listen to. That fun will last a life-time.
With a listenership of anywhere between 12 and 17 million (even with the shrinking of his markets) you bet he would generate that kind of ka-ching.
More power to you. I like Stern, but I don't want kids exposed to his crap.
Well, if I ever get a Sirius, I will :)
