There's no place like home for the holidays - for Pale Male and Lola, too.
The majestic red-tailed hawks, evicted two weeks ago from their nest on the 12th-floor ledge of a ritzy Fifth Ave. co-op, were welcomed back yesterday.
Workers installed a 300-pound, stainless steel basket above the 12th-floor cornice of 927 Fifth Ave., which officials hope the birds will use as a foundation for a new nest.
"It's the miracle of 74th St.," New York City Audubon Society Director E.J. McAdams said yesterday before a jubilant crowd of 50 bird watchers.
"The grass-roots support for Pale Male and Lola has changed the hearts of the building," McAdams added. "Now I hope Pale Male and Lola will come home for the holidays."
As workers from Champion Metal and Glass toiled under gray skies to install the 8-by-3-foot basket and officials christened it by dropping a few twigs in, Pale Male soared above Fifth Ave., while his mate, Lola, initially stayed away from the scene.
The birds were booted by the building's co-op board, amid complaints of pigeon and rat leftovers raining down on the swanky location's doorstep. But bird lovers cried fowl at the residents, who include newswoman Paula Zahn and her husband, developer and co-op board chief Richard Cohen.
Fans - including building resident Mary Tyler Moore - are hoping the ballyhooed birds will settle back in well before mating season, which begins in February.
"This is sweet," said Bruce Neill, 45, of Mount Vernon, Westchester County, who brought his daughters Abby, 8, and Emma, 5, to see the resilient hawks. "We think we own the city, but we don't. We are just borrowing it."

I wonder if this is another tax-payer gift, with no choice in the matter.
Hawks don't eat seeds and millet from the local pet store:

Can't you see you're responsible for displacing those poor insects??
Saw this when we were in NYC last weekend. This is so stupid. They are right across the street from Central Park, it's not like there isn't a tree available for them. The wonderfully shaded sidewalk was full of dumb@sses with signs for these birds.
