Rumsfeld cut off their complaints by saying, "You go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you might want or wish to have." That set off a wave of criticism of the defense chief's brusque manner. Sectary Rumsfeld did not "cut off their complaints" - he actually went on, in that meeting, to directly discuss the situation and certainly followed up. The above is another distortion by the press - who seem for the most part to be absolute AHs!

"I think the American people get it..."Yes, we do, and we will continue to hold the 'free press' accountable when they don't get it.

I may have misheard, but Fox just replayed one of these exchanges and he didn't say that "does NOT sound like a question planted by the press" but rather "that sounds like a question planted by the press." It was also said in a joking manner.
And the press wonders why we despise them.

Two weeks ago at a forward base in Kuwait, a handful of soldiers openly challenged him about inadequate equipment and long deployments. Rumsfeld cut off their complaints by saying, "You go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you might want or wish to have." That set off a wave of criticism of the defense chief's brusque manner.
One person asked the one question and the first thing Rumsfeld said after having him repeat the entire question (far from "cutting him off") was to inform he had *just* been discussing this issue with the general.
The italicized is a complete lie about what occurred.
