School officials in south Brooklyn have issued an ultimatum to parched students: Buy your drinks from us or go thirsty.
The directive came down this month from the superintendent for Region 6, Gloria Buckery, who ordered district officials to ban students from bringing drinks to school.
SNIP
Some went so far as to suggest the ban is a ploy to encourage kids to drink Snapple the official drink of city schools since last year.
Under the $40 million deal, which gave Snapple exclusive rights to place vending machines in public schools for five years, schools are to get a 30 percent commission on drinks sold in their buildings.

Back in the dark ages of the early 80's, my school didn't even have vending machines. You drank water from the fountain. At lunch, milk.

Same here. I somehow got through 12 years of public school without having to rely on vending machines and cafeterias. I usually brought a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to school and drank from the fountain if I was thirsty.

When we were seniors, we got 'open campus' and could go down to the three block main street and get a pop from Griffs Service Station, and it seemed like an incredible treat. Also, maybe a Skoal Bandit or a cigarette in the car, to feed our rebellious sides.

Warm chalky water. I might be two inches taller if it weren't for that d@mn school milk that I couldn't stand to drink.

The current owners of Snapple are apparently quite different than those started Snapple and used to advertise on Rush over a decade ago.
