U.S. Bases on Alert for 'Copycat' Iraq Bomber

U.S. troops were on alert at bases across Iraq on Thursday after concluding that a suicide bomber, probably in Iraqi military uniform, was behind the deadliest strike on Americans since they invaded last year.

"I am concerned about ... copycat attacks," said Brigadier General Carter Ham, the U.S. commander in Mosul where the bomber killed 18 Americans and three Iraqi National Guards on Tuesday in a pre-Christmas lunchtime blast at a crowded base mess tent.

"So we have to be on our best guard over the coming days, weeks and months for that kind of threat," Ham told CNN.

He said the bomber probably wore an Iraqi uniform of the kind increasingly common on U.S. bases as Americans train local forces that they hope will allow them to go home.

The blast creates a nightmare dilemma for troops battling insurgents bent on disrupting a Jan. 30 election. They not only see increasingly sophisticated ambushes while on patrol but now also face a deadly threat to the bases where they eat and sleep.

"All the procedures that involve force protection that need to be looked at will be looked at," Lieutenant-Colonel Steven Boylan, spokesman for the U.S. command in Baghdad, said.

Ham said vetting processes would have to be looked at after they failed to keep out the attacker, whom the Ansar al-Sunna Iraqi Islamist group claimed as a "martyr." It seemed possible the explosives and ball bearings were disguised as body armor.

Security experts believe it would be possible for a would-be suicide bomber to sign up for the fledgling National Guard, or to acquire a uniform and credentials to pass himself off as a member of the Guard. Dozens of Iraqi Guards and police have been found murdered around Mosul in recent weeks.

Infiltration by insurgents into Iraqi security forces has already begun chipping away at trust needed for U.S. troops to turn over responsibilities to them before leaving.

General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters in Washington that the lunchtime blast at the Marez base in northern Iraq was apparently caused by "an improvised explosive device worn by an attacker."

Why be concerned about copy cat killers IF you Mr. Brigadier General are tasked with buttoning down your bases. It cant happen. If it does you should be strung up. How's that? Make it not happen.

And why not get your heads out of your politically correct asses and do not hire LOCAL MUSLIMS to do work. I dont care about how they feel. I want no more American brothers killed. Make your bases 100% American run, 100% safe.

Is it really that hard?

You know, when our son told us he was going to Baghdad International, I assumed he would be doing his present job---aircraft structural maintenance. He told us they are going over there to " babysit" the Iraqi's who work at the airport. I thought he was joking.

This is what happens when you allow yourself to suffer under totalitarian rule. You forget how to run your own life.

Bush, Rumsfeld, Ham, et.al.: STOP HIRING LOCALS YOU DAMNABLE BONEHEADS!

It _has_ to be the stupidest idea they've had to let locals intermingle with the Troops. In WW2-Europe if a Nazi was in your camp; you killed it. In WW2-Pacific if a Jap was in your camp; you killed it. They were, unarguably, the Bad Guys.

However, in Iraq, we can't outright kill because they might be friendlies. There _are_ no friendlies in a war; there are Bad Guys and there are Suspicious Guys. And unless you can 100% tell one from the other: stay away from 'em in casual/unguarded situations and places (such as the mess tent). What's so hard about THAT?

P.S. - if you can positively identify the family of the bomber: burn 'em alive. It just may cause the families of OTHER bombers to try to get their offspring to reconsider their tactics and motives. They apparently hate us already, so what's to lose?

Maybe it's federal contracting laws which prohibit barring Muslims from employment. I know KBR has a thing for hiring 3rd world Muslims to work in the chow halls. They had a high turnover rate at the last base I was at. They liked to put bacon or sausage into all kinds of dishes.
