Churches can be compelled to do a lot of things. Mormons no longer sanction polygamy. In Canada they are prosecuting clergy for "hate" speach.
Do you think that a church could be forced to marry two people of different religions by the government if it conflicted with doctrine? What politician would dare try to enforce that law?
