A horse is dead and its rider in critical condition after colliding with a car in northeast Las Vegas.
The accident happened about 6:00 PM Tuesday on North Walnut Road and Judson Avenue near East Lake Mead Boulevard. Police say the horse and rider darted into traffic, hitting a 1994 Chevrolet Beretta driven by 22-year-old Noe Renteria.
52-year-old Mike McCutcheon was thrown from the horse. The horse died shortly after the collision.
McCutcheon was taken to a local hospital. A 13-year-old juvenile inside the car suffered minor injuries. Renteria was not injured.
The accident remains under investigation.
When I was a young fellow driving an MG-TD I came upon three or four horses in the middle of a dark road at night. They scattered every way but up. I believe my little car would have just about fit under the belly of one, leaving my head behind. Scary experience I still remember.
I drive through rural Vermont quite frequently, and often encounter people on horseback on the road. I ALWAYS slow down to 5 - 10 MPH while passing. My concern, of course, is for the horse...not the left-wing liberal Sanders-loving SOB riding the poor beast.
I appreciate your feelings for the horse... is there some inside joke we are supposed to get on why you would have such loathing for the riders?
Probably.... and also, apparently that it was dark.
Inside joke? Not really...just don't care much for Vermont (Dean, Leahy, Jeffords, Sanders) liberals. I like horses, and would never want to be responsible for hurting one. I wouldn't slow down for a liberal.
How valiant of you.
Could have been a lot worse. Still sad though. Prayers for the rider.
I slow down for horses and stop for cows (if no rider:') but the deer scare me. I dread driving at night in deer country.
I live in horse country. It's no big deal to drive past a horse. And it is polite to do it very slowly. If you are going slowly, if a horse bolts, or kicks your car, the worst that will happen is some property damage. The really dangerous collisions happen when a horse gets loose and is hit at speed. I have heard of people in a car getting kicked to death by a horse the was thrown into the passenger compartment.
Remember: the rider is MUCH more vulnerable than you are in a car.
One of my very few near-death experiences driving was in my old BMW 2002, on a deserted road in northern New Mexico, almost falling asleep at the wheel, and coming up over a rise to find a horse in the road in front of me.
I hit the brakes so hard, the rear of the car lifted off the road and started to bounce from side to side, with me cranking the wheel opposite the bounce to keep the front pointed forward. Lucky I didn't roll it, which at 80-90mph, would have sucked. I was plenty awake for the rest of the drive.
Ha! You are a very young lady, I'd say. The last year the BMW 2002 was made was 1976.
I have little compassion for people who have the blood of fifty million innocent children on their hands.
I maintained bowel and bladder control, but it took a week for my testicles to descend again.
I agree. Sounds like another case of a loose nut behind the saddle horn.
And if you fancy BMWs, you should know the model number 2002 comes from the fact that it is the successor to the BMW 2000, a very sexy and rare machine.
Yer nuttier than a fruitcake.
