Report: Mosul Attack Was a Suicide Bombing
ABC News ^ | Dec. 22, 2004

New evidence shows the bombing of a U.S. military mess tent in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday — which killed 22 people and wounded more than 70 others — was a suicide attack, ABC News has learned.

Investigators at the base have found remnants of a torso and a suicide vest that was probably a backpack, sources told ABC News, indicating that the attack was a suicide bombing.

The bombing at the mess tent at Forward Operating Base Marez in Mosul was one of the deadliest attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq since the start of the war. Early reports indicated that the massive explosion might have been the result of a rocket attack.

But a radical Sunni Muslim group, the Ansar al-Sunnah Army, later claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was a "martyrdom operation," a reference to a suicide bomber.

A day after the devastating attack, another message posted on a Web site, allegedly by Ansar al-Sunnah, provided details of the daring attack. According to the online message, the suicide bomber was a 24-year-old man from Mosul who worked at the base for two months and had provided information about the base to the group.

The base, also known as the al-Ghizlani military camp, is about three miles south of Mosul and is used by both U.S. troops and the interim Iraqi government's security forces. It once was Mosul's civilian airport but is now a heavily fortified area.

The deadly attack in the middle of a U.S. military base has led to questions about security at the facility in Mosul, a northern Iraqi city that has seen an increase in insurgent attacks since the U.S. military assault on Fallujah last month.

So tell me--why are arabs of any stripe allowed anywhere near an American encampment?

Oh yeah, the whole PC thing. "You can stab them, shoot them, bomb them, or otherwise mangle them, but by God, don't insult them or hurt their feelings!"

Though I'm sure that's about to come to an end pretty soon. Too bad that it was too late for a lot of soldiers.

I hope this doesn't mean that our Iraqi Sercurity Force hasn't been infiltrated by terrorists.

I also wondered how this guy got that near the tent. Somebody wasn't taking his guard duty seriously enough, I suspect.

Good point, Alien. If our military wasn’t hamstrung by politically correct rules but instead fought this war like we fought WWII, we’d have been able to clean out the place by now and this might not have happened. For example, when we planned the Fallujah counter-attack we warned the terrorists and they were able to leave and re-group - and attack us elsewhere. In WWII we would have leveled the places, i.e. accepted greater collateral damage, and thus reduce the threat to our troops.

Out troops should come first. We face a barbarian enemy in a barbarian culture. There is only one way to fight a barbarian enemy.

It's actually pretty common practice for the US military to hire locals to handle some things, i.e. food preparation and serving, translating, hauling garbage off base, etc. I'll tell you what; if the Japanese ever really wanted Yokosuka back, they could have it back in about an hour flat whether or not the US wanted to give it up.

These aren't Iraqis doing the killing, these are Arab terrorists, cowards, and killers. They have no place in this life or the next.

My question is the same one I've asked a million times of the Israelis. "Why are people in that region allowed to carry backpacks? Especially, why are young Iraqi men allowed on a military base wearing a backpack? It seems like a no-brainer. Everyone made to drop any backpacks at the entrance and everyone patted down for suicide belts.

Having served in the Marine Corps in the late 1950's,I would find it difficult to serve in today's U. S. military. It is too politically correct. Many times they act like a bunch of social workers in uniforms. How many of our troops have been killed by letting their guards down?

Mark, we also made a distinction between Nazis and Germans during WWII. Still, our troops come first. Don't you agree?

Fallujah was a Salafi stronghold. Salafi is fundamentalist Islam in the Sunni tradition. They welcomed and aided the jihadists. Thus, like the Japanese and Germans, they are a vital support structure for the enemy. War is horrible but sometimes civilization has to go to war to defeat the barbarians.

Thanks, ardara. I think the younger generation needs a history lesson on how we fought and won wars in the past. This is not some arm-chair debating topic. We need vets like you to remind us of the hard cold facts about war.

As loose as it is, it sounds like the airports have better security than this facility did.

I saw the General who is responsible for this base on Fox and Friends this morning. It's his responsibility to safeguard his troops. This ultimately rests in his lap. This should be a career ender for him at the least.

One question.

Why?
