So, can you recommend this switch to us inertia-bound non-tech-savvy IE users?

Yes. Download Firefox and try it. It is free and it is easy. You can leave IE on your computer as a backup, and after a little while, you will almost never use it.

I switched a few days ago. It's twice as fast as MSIE and it eliminates pop-ups entirely. I have not found any spyware either since I started using it

Absolutely. I've been using Mozilla Firefox for some time on my Windows XP machine and it's a great browser.

I'd recommend the following for any Windows machine:

- Install and keep Norton Antivirus updated
- Clean and immunize your system with Spybot
- Switch from IE to Mozilla's Firefox

I'll split a Firefox with ya Matt, when you figure out how to operate it well enough!

FireFox is excellent. It loads slowly, but once loaded is very fast. It's more secure than IE. Get the adblock and spoofstick extensions and you should be in great shape.

Yeah, do it. It might take you five minutes to download and install. Once you do there are a few threads here with tips for settings and tweaks. Firefox is easily customized.

Yes, but only if you can think in Russian.

Yes. If you can use IE, it should not be much of a transition, but there are some really good features.

For all you news junkies, FireFox has this thingy that updates the links for your web sites that are compatible with FireFox's update thingy. It's like clicking on the refresh button on FR but it's on other news web sites. All the latest headlines appear in your bookmarked link and you can choose to link immediately to the story. It's a cool thingy. I think it's called Live Links thingy.

I switched last night after hearing and reading about here on FR. I love it already! It is a lot like IE but without the security hassled. I would suggest trying it out!

I am a complete neanderthal when it comes to this but I made the switch to Firefox. It was easy and it is faster and better than IE.
Grunt.

Yep, wholeheartedly. It works almost identically, and is substantially more secure. And you still leave IE in place, in case you need it for some oddball site.

If you are on a high-speed connections, there are a couple of easy tweaks that substantially speed Firefox. Go here:

I have Firefox on all my home computers, my laptop and my work computer. My brother has installed it on all of his and most of the computer savvy people I know have done the same. I have had it since last year and other than with some sites that are specifically designed to work with IE, I would have no reason to even have IE on any of my machines.

I don't get popups any more, I have far more control of what I see, I even get pages with no graphics that I can then "choose" to see. I don't bother since it is all "push" stuff.

And I no longer have a need to run Ad-aware any more. I used to have to use it constantly.

There is no comparison. Firefox is far superior in a world where people are scrambling to get control of you computer or just spam you with annoying popups, pictures and links. I just get a lot more done.
