At this morning's White House press conference, President Bush was asked a question about his plan to reform U.S. immigration policy. In response to the question, the president said, at least half a dozen times, that his proposal entailed allowing workers in other countries to enter or remain in the U.S. legally to fill "jobs that Americans will not do."
The White House policy is not to allow follow-up questions at press conferences, however, here are some matters that the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) believes require clarification from President Bush. FAIR has also addressed these questions to President Bush, seeking clarification about the immigration policies the White House plans to put before Congress in 2005:
Q. Mr. President, you talk about "jobs that Americans will not do." Could you please provide a comprehensive list of such jobs?
Q. Mr. President, you frequently talk about allowing the free market to work. Why not apply this principle to the jobs you claim "Americans will not do," and allow the free market to bid up wages for American workers? In your opinion, is upward mobility still a desirable objective for American workers?
Q. Mr. President, at this morning's news conference, you spoke about the desire of people in Mexico and other countries to work in this country in order to put food on their families' tables. Would you please address the matter of millions of American families who used to do jobs in construction, meatpacking, janitorial services, restaurant and hotel work, and other trades who would like to put food on their families' tables?
Q. Mr. President, how do you propose to pay for the education of the children, the health care for the families and all the other services that the foreign workers who will do "the jobs Americans will not do" and their families will require?
Q. Mr. President, as you conceded in this morning's press conference, the vetting process and background checks of cabinet appointees failed to uncover problems with your Homeland Security nominee. Can you assure the American public that the vetting process and background checks on the millions of illegal aliens who will be applying for legal residence under your program will receive a more comprehensive investigation of their backgrounds?
We, along with millions of Americans from all walks of life, would appreciate your views on these important issues as you prepare to make immigration policy reform a centerpiece of your second administration.
One word:

Excellent post.
Doing those "jobs" is what gives many the desire to better themselves so that they don't have to do "those" jobs. Not only does it remove the job from an American, who will now seek public assistance, it removes the money from America as well, since most send the dollars back home to be spent there instead of here! Welcome to world welfare.
Excuse me, but we're talking about illegal aliens. You're the one who brought up Mexicans.
Bush is totally blind on this issue. There is no convincing him so efforts need to be elsewhere, such as the House, to shape whatever comes out legislatively on immigration reform.
Q. Mr. President, you correctly state that the U.S.A. is "a nation of laws," then moments later you sanction the illegal presence of 12 million + Mexicans in our country, which is distinctly in violation of our immigrations laws. Can you explain the discrepancy? Or, is Mexico the 51st state?
What makes you think there are only illegal Mexicans here? I don't recall anyone named Pedro hijacking a plane...
'rod' always shows up to defend the mexicans (only)........even when he's the only one posting about them.
I knew Bush was bad on this issue when I voted for him, but Kerry is worse. That being said, Do Presidents not take an other to preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States? The Libs use the courts to get their way all the time. Are law suits not an option for Americans who want their borders defended? If immigration laws exist that are not being enforced, can the feds be ordered by the courts to enforce the existing law?
Didn't the courts order the enforcement of desegregation?
Yawn::::
Bush is not a traitor and no one called him that.
No one said they wanted jobs.
Its a matter of ILLEGALS crossing our borders ILLEGALLY and jeopardizing our national security, increase in crimes being committed by them, increasing taxpayer costs for schools, healthcare, welfare.
Yawn::::: all you want but this is a serious issue and not to be taken so lightly or so blase. Yawn::::
BINGO!!!
To all, forgive my spelling errors. Of course I meant that the president takes an OTH. Of course perhaps they took an "other" and therein lies the problem.
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZTTTTTTTTT.
Wrong answer.
Try again.
Hmmm, I'm disapointed....you were doing so well for about 3 weeks there....
Three weeks without typing the Messican word...
oh well, back to square one for you.
Barf. Just another "Bush's crap don't stink because he's a Republican and maybe rewarding border intruders and other lawbreakers really might be a good idea after all" post.
Mr. President, when you implement you guest worker program, will you or how do you plan to shut the border to allow in only guest workers and keep out any new illegas?
Mr. President, when there is a downturn in the economy or any other time when a guest workers employment has terminated, how do you plan to send your guest workers, along with their families, and children born in America back to their home country, now that there are no jobs to be done? Could you explain how this will be done since you are unwilling to locate and send home the current illegals and their families?
Mr. President, since there currently is no system to track illegals, how will you track your guest workers to ensure they will be sent home after their guest worker period has expired? Also, will they be eligible for unemployment compensation when their guest worker period has terminated &/or any other time that there is not a willing employer to be matched with a willing guest worker?
