Why does one need a license from the government to get married in the first place?
I agree in principle, but all the legal stuff is there to deal with the legal ramifications of marriage. i.e. abuse, divorce, support, estate, insurance benefits. That kind of stuff. That's why it's such a 'hot button' issue with the sodomites.

If you punch me, what difference does it make if you are a stranger to me, or my wife? Charges will still be filed.
If we divorce, what happens other than the modification or annulment of certain contracts?
The same with your arguments for estate, insurance, or any other issue.
So you didn't really answer my question. As a free person and a Christian I find it morally reprehensible that government has any "licensing" function of marriage. Enforcement of contracts, to be sure... but licensing???
