Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner, R-Va., gave embattled Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld a vote of confidence on Sunday, contradicting an earlier report quoting him as saying he'd "had it" with the defense chief.
"I assure you that in the three-plus years that I have worked with Secretary Rumsfeld, we've had our differences," Sen. Warner told NBC's "Meet the Press."
"But I have confidence in my ability and his ability to continue to work together as a team for the common goals of the men and women of the Armed Forces and to support the goals of the commander in chief."
The Senate's top military man rejected calls from some his colleagues for Rumsfeld to step down, saying, "We should not at this point in time entertain any idea of changing those responsibilities in the Pentagon."
Warner added, "We should express our confidence in the commander in chief and his principal subordinates. The president makes the choice, and we're going to back the president and support his choice and make it work."
Commenting on a report by columnist Robert Novak, who quoted Warner earlier this week as saying, "I've had it with [Rumsfeld]," the Virginia Republican said, "I don't have any recollection of that."
Good. At least this GOP senator hasn't sold out.
The Rats have to get him out of there, he is doing to much of a good job and they cannot have that. Besides it would discredit the president if they got rid of him by their continual blowviating about him.
John 'RINO' MCCain Sold out Rumsfeld.
On this issue anyway. It's time for Senator Warner to retire.
Warner gave a negative positive, I dont call that backing Rummy.
Don't forget Chuck Hagel.
And Susan Collins........
