Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested in a German newspaper interview published Saturday that the Republican Party should move "a little to the left," a shift that he said would allow it to pick up new voters.

I guess it doesn't look like we have to cave in for votes, now does it Arnold? We won, remember?

I would dispute his claim that the Republican party covers the spectrum from the Right wing to the middle.

Actually, I would suggest further that the Republican party covers the spectrum of the marginally left to the extreme right.

It's just that we're gonna ignore our leftists and only *slightly* appease our mushy middle-of-the-roaders. :o)

Awwwww C'mon. He is married to a Shriver (Kennedy tie in), what do you expect? I think the party needs to move to the right, away from all this socialist nonsense, not toward it.

Arnold is talking primarily here about California, which has gone completely off the deep end politically.

And that is one (of several) flaws in Arnold's argument. Especially in California, the Democrats keep moving to the left at breakneck speed -- what starts as a fringe issue among a few in the far left becomes a "mainstream" issue in a matter of months. The Republicans would be thus condemned to forever playing catchup to the left. They could never win because too many conservatives and libertarians would give up voting and few leftists would choose a "moderate" Republican over a Democrat who wants 100% socialism now. True, Arnold won but how much of that was due to the fact that the Davis administration was so horrible that no one could deny it?

I also think Schwarzenegger's argument surrenders the battle of ideas to the left. It assumes that the only legitimate new ideas are on the side of socialism and the only thing conservatives and moderates (whoever moderates are) can do is follow the lead of the socialists.

IOW Party first, country last.
Is there any wonder that I've never joined a political party? They all (the parties) are interested only in job security and the country be damned!
A pox on all their houses!

I am somehow reminded of that quip.

What's the difference between Republicans and Democrats? Under Republicans, we move to the left more slowly.

Arnold needs to be terminated.

The Republicans have moved so far to the left already (domestically; budgets for social welfare; illegal aliens, etc.) that they have disappeared off the radar scope.

The Republicans ARE leftists in many respects.

As a FORMER Southern Californian (10 years in Lost Angeles) I feel that from time to time I can comment on these topics, so here goes:

Ahnold, STFU and get back to work.

(I would have voted for McClintock)

Romney in Massachusetts did more damage in his first term than the damnocrats did in forty years.

Rinos are the enemy.

No surprise there - the only reason we backed him up was because he was "electable". Social lefty, as always.

If you're a "financial conservative" and a social lefty, you're NOT a financial conservative. Social programs cost money - lots of it, and emotions take priority over reason. Look what he did with billions for stem cells. Make sense? Nope.

I think only one other republican governor has been elected out there since I was born in 1980 but I could very easily be wrong).

Dukemajian & Wilson were both republicans.

so he is the 3rd, but he is the first once since what Wilson in 1992?

I was only 12 so I dont really know....

If he can economically right the ship in California, the rest will take care of itself...

Arnold would be a lot happier here in New England, among his Eurotrash bretheren.

Arnold is a huge improvement over Gray Davis.

In what respect? Please list Arnold's accomplishments.

What he HAS done is get leftist policies instituted that would have been halted by the Republicans in the legislature had he been a Democrat.

In fact, the Gray Davis/Arnold election may well herald that we've turned the corner on the problem already.

Actually, I think Arnold will fail to stop that liberal bloodbath while owning the consequences. Republicans will take the hit with him, just like they did with Nixon.
