Two county deputies shot, along with suspect (Two ARIZONA COPS shot by ILLEGAL ALIEN!!!)
East Valley Tribune ^ | 12/17/2004 | Kim Smith and Kristina Davis

Posted on 12/18/2004 6:45:29 PM PST by nanak

Two Maricopa County sheriff's deputies were shot Thursday during the serving of a search warrant in east Mesa. A suspect was shot by a third deputy.

Deputy Sean Pearce, who is the son of Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, was shot in the abdomen. He was flown to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, where he underwent surgery to remove part of his large intestine. Deputy Lew Argetsinger was shot in the hand and taken by ambulance to the medical center. Both were stable.

The suspect, Jorge Luis Guerra Vargas, 22, was flown to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix with nonlife-threatening facial injuries.

According to authorities, detectives with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office wanted to execute a search warrant at the mobile home of a homicide’s investigative lead, but asked Maricopa County SWAT team members to enter first to ensure their safety.

Lt. Dave Trombi said seven members of the team knocked on the door at 111 S. 91st Way at 6:35 a.m., announced their presence in English and Spanish, then broke through the door. They were a short distance inside when a subject opened fire.

Both deputies shot were wearing ballistic body armor, but Pearce was struck in an unprotected spot, Trombi said.

A third deputy returned fire on GuerraVargas, who was alone in the home, Trombi said.

Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Minter said detectives had hoped to obtain evidence pertaining to a recent homicide in Hewlitt Station, a community near Queen Valley.

A hunter called deputies Dec. 5 after he found a body with a gunshot wound to the head buried under a pile of scrap lumber, Minter said.

Investigators found fresh tire tracks on the scene, and the clue led authorities to the mobile home.

Esteban Soto, the investigative lead in the case, was found Thursday in New Mexico and is being detained for questioning there.

Deputies are still working to identify the body, which is described as a 20- to 25-year-old Hispanic male.

Pearce has been on the force for 11 years, Deputy Argetsinger for three years.

Rep. Pearce, said he was in Washington, D.C., testifying on an immigration panel when he was told his son had been shot.

"He is feisty. He will do well," he said. "I guarantee that the moment he is allowed back, he will put that uniform on and be out there doing police work."

Russell Pearce also was shot in the chest and hand in the line of duty about 20 years ago while chasing gang members in Guadalupe.

Efforts to contact Argetsinger's family were unsuccessful.

Ford paid double or triple the prevailing wages for his work force, to drive wages UP, because he wanted to build a thriving middle class which could eventually afford to buy millions of his Model T's.

He was not interested in building a few "Stutz Bearcats" for other millionaires

Uh do a google search with the keywords, "Ford, union, 30's".

There were many battles, some were actually bloody.

JMO, you try to use selective history.

"I don't try knee jerkingly to lump every immigrant in the same class as this guy."

Neither does anyone else on this thread, so stop patting yourself on the back for being so tolerant.

Those who are upset about immigration are upset about ILLEGAL immigration, and it is those of you who are attacking those who are against illegal immigration who are deliberately blurring the line between legal and illegal immigration, as you did in your quote above. That is intellectually dishonest.

Just as it is intellectually dishonest to claim that those who oppose illegal immigration are just racists and bigots, without posting any evidence to support such accusations.

You, and others of your ilk, claim that those of us who are against illegal immigration lump every immigrant in the same class as the illegal immigrant who shot the cops, but that is not true. There is no post that any of you can point to that actually disparages Hispanics, that claims that all illegal aliens shoot cops, that claims that no one but illegal aliens ever commit any crimes, but no one could ever tell by reading the posts of those of you defending illegal immigration, since all you do is put words into the mouths of those with whom you disagree and then disparage those very words. That is the straw man method of argumentation and it is rampant on this thread on the part of those defending illegal immigration and denigrating those who are opposed to illegal immigration.

You are known by the company you keep, and those who are attacking those who are against illegal immigration on this thread are all using intellectually dishonest methods to attack those oppose illegal immigration.

COEXERJ145 starts off the dishonesty by suggesting in post #6 that, "So are you going to demand the U.S. fire a dozen Peacekeepers at Mexico for this or will one or two be enough?" Of course, no one on this thread has suggested any such thing, but right off the bat COEXERJ145 suggests that persons against illegal immigration want to commit mass murder against Mexicans. This is an unwarranted and underhanded calumny, unworthy of anyone who claims to be an Aggie and thus to uphold the Aggie honor code.

Then staytrue in post #16 chimes in with "Your glee in exploiting a shooting to promote your point of view is NOT HELPING YOUR CAUSE", although there is no glee apparent in simply posting a news story about the facts of a case. That does not prevent staytrue from dishonestly attributing glee where there is none apparent, in an effort to disparage a fellow freeper.

Then COEXERJ145 in post #24 uses the intellectually dishonest strawman argumentation method by declaring, "People like you, who have for whatever reason, become convinced that an entire class (or classes) of people are the cause of every problem in this country are just as dangerous or perhaps even more so than the very threats you claim to be against." COEXERJ145 thus claims that nanak is convinced of something that nanak never once wrote in any of his posts. COEXERJ145 would rather topple a strawman, that illegal immigrants are the cause of EVERY problem in this country, than dispute with nanak about something he actually wrote.

Once-Ler then wades in by claiming that "Ergo all illegals shoot cops. They are all guilty and should all be punished." Of course it does not follow that ALL illegals shoot cops just because one illegal shoots two cops, but then no one on the anti-illegal immigrant side ever wrote that all illegals are guilty, but Once-Ler would rather knock down the strawman that he has set up than deal with what anyone has actually written about illegal aliens on this thread. He would rather deal with an evil made up out of whole cloth from the feverish depths of his anti-bigot little mind than deal with the legitimate concerns of those who want an end to massive illegal immigration.

Once-Ler continues in the same strawman methodology in post #34, where he twists the plain and clear words, "I say shut the borders and deport all illegals" to somehow mean, "I got mine and the rest of the world can go the hell. Freedom is too precious to give to others. It's worth hoarding for ourselves." Words mean what they mean. Shut the borders and deport all illegals means just that, not that freedom is too precious to give to others. This is a typically intellectually dishonest way of ascribing dishonorable and malicious motives to one's intellectual opponents based on no evidence whatsoever. This tactic says volumes about the author of this distorted and dishonest interpretation.

Then Dane jumps into the fray by posting a link to another thread about a crime and assumes that everyone who responds to this thread and not to the linked thread does so because "the above scum doesn't have a hispanic name" thereby claiming that the reason folks are against illegal immigrants committing crimes is because they are against Hispanics. This is a totally bogus issue. All conservatives are against anyone committing any crimes. The problem with illegal immigrants committing crimes in this country is that if the law had been upheld, then the illegal immigrant would not even be in this country to commit any crimes. There would be the same sense of outrage if our government refused to guard our prisons and jails and consequently convicts who were supposed to be sitting in jail were instead abroad among the citizenry, committing crimes. In fact, that was why the Willie Horton ads were so effective, rather than the fact that Willie was black.

Dane, in post #94, continues the pattern of putting words in other people's mouth in order to advance his viewpoint, by taking Travis McGee's simple and true statement, "They bring with them a disregard and a disrespect for the rule of law, from day one" which is undeniable, since they know it is against the law to enter the country the way they do but they do so anyway and somehow turns it into "All of them are akin to murderers to you, IMO, correct." At least Dane adds, IMO, meaning presumably, in MY opinion, but why cannot Dane permit Travis McGee to state his own opinions and Dane state Dane's own opinions, rather than having Dane make up stuff and then tell us it is his opinion of what Travis McGee really believes, even though Dane posts no information to support his assertion.

Illegal immigration is a problem. If those of you want to be taken seriously, try to argue from facts and stop your baseless accusations and transparent strawman arguments.

"They won't answer."

They would rather set up and then knock down strawmen. It apparently makes them feel morally superior.

We have plenty of home-grown cop killers, without laying out the welcome mat for all of the killers of Mexico, thank you

Ok, you finally admitted it, instead of hiding behind "illegal immigrants" you finally stated "Mexico".

Oh BTW, should Mexico have been subjected to a Ted Bundy, as fair game in your philosphical world.

Write an aritcle in the same style and the editors may think it is worth publishing, IMO.

Mexico is next door to us. We share 2400 miles of common border. Today, Mexican killers can just walk in.

(As can Russians, Mongolians etc, IF they first make it to Mexico, which is not so easy for them.)

Does it make me a "racist" in your mind for pointing out this obvious fact?

Does using the word Mexican now constitute a charge of racism?

You really have race-fever. You see racists under every bed. It colors your every thought.

No point of contention there, Travis. Max's reply #202 shows he has the flair of a Thomas Oliphant or E.J. Dionne, to delve into the psychological(i.e a Ms. Cleo with class) and say it nicely in words.

Like I said in my reply #206, Max should send his resume to the NYT, Wash Post, or Boston Globe, he may have a budding career there.

Employers and/or facilitators of illegal aliens should be sentenced to bunk with the illegal alien(s) for five (5) years at hard labor in a federal prison where there are no "early-out" paroles and lose all voting and passport rights for life with no appeal allowed.

Second offense is fifteen (15) years.

2 SWAT deputies wounded in search

Senta Scarborough
The Arizona Republic
Dec. 17, 2004 12:00 AM

MESA - Two Maricopa County sheriff's SWAT deputies, including the son of state Rep. Russell Pearce, were shot and injured early Thursday while executing a search warrant at a home.

Another deputy returned fire and wounded a 22-year-old man at the mobile home in a county island near Ellsworth and Broadway roads, officials said.

The search warrant stemmed from the Dec. 5 discovery of the body of a Mesa man in a Pinal County wash. He was last seen at the home. The man who officials said fired on the deputies, Jorge Luis Guerra Vargas, was alone at the time and had not been questioned as of late Thursday. advertisement

Deputy Sean Pearce, an 11-year veteran, was injured when a bullet entered under his protective vest. Deputy Lew Argetsinger, a three-year veteran, was shot in the hand.

Pearce, 32, underwent surgery Thursday afternoon and was in stable condition; Argetsinger, 28, was in stable condition at the same hospital. Both are expected to survive.

They are the first two deputies since the late-1990s to be injured in a shooting, Sgt. Kip Rustenburg said. In 1977, Pearce's father, a former county deputy, was also shot in the line of duty and lost a finger. He was awarded a Medal of Honor for his service. The elder Pearce cut short a trip to Washington, D.C., on Thursday to return home.

Vargas, the only person inside the house, fired first at deputies and was shot by a third deputy inside the home, sheriff's Lt. Dave Trombi said. He was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries to his face and was expected to be booked in connection with the shooting, sheriff's Lt. Paul Chagolla said.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Department asked the Maricopa County SWAT team to serve the warrant because the home, in the 100 block of 91st Way, was in Maricopa County.

Stephen Soto, 41, who lived at the home but wasn't there during the 6:35 a.m. shooting, was later found at a motel in Grants, N.M., and detained. Pinal County Sheriff's detectives flew there late Thursday to question him about the homicide. Authorities do not know why Vargas was at the house or his relation to Soto.

The body of Daniel Rojo Tavira, 23, was found in a wash near Queen Valley not far from Superior. Items found near the body helped lead authorities to Soto's mobile home.

Jean Burwell, who lives next door, said the people who live there moved in about six or seven months ago.

"I heard the wood crash in the gate," said Burwell, 58. "I heard glass being broken and then 10 quick shots."

SWAT deputies first knocked and announced in English and Spanish who they were and why they were there. When there was no answer, they broke down the door. Seven entered the home.

"Two went to the left and encountered the shooter who immediately opened fire on them," Trombi said. A third deputy returned fire, shooting the armed man. Argetsinger was shot by one of the suspect's rounds, Trombi said.

Maricopa County will investigate the shooting and Pinal County will conduct the search of the home in the homicide case.

"The entire SWAT team and the sheriff's office is upset that the two deputies have been injured like this," Trombi said. "The two deputies are known as extremely dedicated, very experienced and highly trained and very well-liked."

Ok, you finally admitted it, instead of hiding behind "illegal immigrants" you finally stated "Mexico".

This was posted at #10 on this thread.

Excerpt from email from Arizona Rep. Russell Pearce

December 18 -- I was in Washington DC as an invite by the Brookings Institute to participate this last Thursday (12/16/04) on an immigration panel to debate the national policy on immigration (mostly on children, but certainly extended to the entire issue of legal, illegal, benefits and the impact on America, etc.) and while on the panel, I was interrupted and given a message to call LuAnne in reference to an emergency at home. I called to find out my son Sean had been shot while executing a search warrant on a home for homicide suspects, and was being flown by helicopter to the hospital. I later learned the suspects and the shooter were illegal aliens and had been issued matricula cards so they could get services in the United States.

The shooter and suspects were illegal aliens with Mexican identification. What country would you say they were from?

Previously, in post #73, primeval patriot had the unmitigated gall to ask, "Has that incident been posted on this forum?"

Then primeval patriot has the nerve to request of Dane, "Let us know where that thread is."

And the lovely and gracious cyncooper, gets up on her high horse and self-righteously responds, "As I and others with a brain suspected, you didn't really care about the other incident. You didn't bother to make one post on it. Further, your stupid assumption there was no thread on it was immediately demonstrated to be WRONG."

cyncooper, you are way out of bounds to accuse primeval patriot of not caring about the other incident simply because he expressed an interest in knowing where that other thread was posted. For goodness sake, no one reads every article posted on this forum, so just because primeval patriot had not seen it previously does not mean that he did not care about the other incident. If one does not know that a thread exists, one is not likely to have posted on that thread. Lack of a post on a particular thread does not prove that a person is not concerned about that particular issue, as you with your self-declared brain, should be able to comprehend.

Furthermore, inquiring if a thread has been posted and asking to be informed as to where a thread is located does not mean that one has made the assumption, stupid or otherwise, that there was no thread about said topic. In fact, if one indeed did not believe that there was no thread on said topic, one is more likely to claim that there was no thread on said topic than to ask were the thread is located. Asking where the thread is located indicates an interest in going to read that thread to inform oneself about the facts of that incident rather than a disbelief in the existence of such a thread.

Hey that's fine Travis, whatever you want to think, you are entitled to your opinion.

As am I, and IMO, you and hillary have something in common, you're both control freaks.

hillary hates that business owner, making a profit and providing a beneficial product or service, without being under her totlaarian yoke.

You, IMO, have animus towards that same person, because he/she is making that same beneficial product or providing that beneficial service by not employing the right kind of people, according to Travis's standards.

Russell Pearce also was shot in the chest and hand in the line of duty about 20 years ago while chasing gang members in Guadalupe.

That would be Guadalupe, Arizona. No further details
