The four corners of the Earth; the Earth is supported on pillars; the heavens are stretched over the Earth like a tent; Jesus taken to a high mountain and shown all the kingdoms of the world (only possible if the world was flat). All these were used by the Church to deny the concept of a spherical Earth. It wasn't until the evidence became overwhelming that the Church recanted its position.
We see the same thing happening with the biological sciences today.
