THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Please accept our heartfelt thanks for the excellent support that you provided to the San Francisco Zoo through your letters, emails and phone calls to the Board of Supervisors and the Mayor in our recent campaign to defeat the Gonzalez sponsored legislation that would have banned elephants from the Zoo forever. Your demonstrated commitment to the Zoo has given all of us at the Zoo a renewed sense of purpose and strength in our efforts to transform the Zoo into a premier zoological institution and an important conservation and educational resource for the community.
At the Board of Supervisors meeting on December 7th, the Gonzalez sponsored ordinances were not approved. This was an important victory for the Zoo. Instead, in an effort to work out a compromise with Supervisor Gonzalez, Supervisor Bevan Dufty proposed an alternative ordinance which was approved. While most aspects of Supervisor Dufty's legislation appear workable from the Zoo's perspective, the requirement that any future elephant exhibit be at least 15 acres is unworkable and results in a practical ban on elephants for the time being. We are hopeful that, over time, a more workable compromise can and will be worked out.
We would especially like to thank and acknowledge Supervisor Sean Elsbernd for his unwavering support of the Zoo, in opposing this legislation and the 15 acre exhibit requirement.
The Zoo will not bring elephants back unless and until a new, spacious, state of the art elephant habitat can be designed, built and funded. Our philosophy on major new habitats is reflected in our new African Savanna and Lemur Forest habitats which provide both animals and visitors a rich and rewarding experience.
Our focus over the next year will be to continue to work on existing habitats, to enhance and enrich the space for our animals in the eastern half of the Zoo. One of our first priorities will be to design and construct an expanded habitat for our young grizzlies. During this period we will also be working closely with our partners in City government to accomplish our joint goals of working together to transform the Zoo.
We will keep you informed of our progress, and we hope that you will all come out to the Zoo to see it for yourselves.
Thank you again for your support.

I mean, what the heck is the deal with Gonzales? What is his game plan? Who are the constituency behind his constituency? The guy's always bothered me, seems like a complete snake, IMHO.
FMCDH(BITS)
He's a freakin lefty. That's the deal with him.
I love elephants, esp. the Asian (from India, et all) elephant. And the tiger, the zebra, the buffalo, and so many other animals - I want my young ones to see them all ... SEE them with their OWN EYES.
The kids see lots of wildlife:
Rats, feral cats and dogs and rabid racoons!
Let's see the croc-hunter take on some of these animals!
BTTT!!!!!!!
You can say that again. I visited S.F. for the first time a couple of years ago. Let's just say I have firm plans to avoid ever going back. What a shame for what is otherwise a beautiful city and interesting area.
Something tells me this storefront is a common sight in San Francisco. For an enlightened town, it sure looks filthy. I haven't been there since I was probably 12 and it was beautiful then (1960's).
Wait, I take that back, I was at Pac Bell park for a baseball game just after 9/11. The area around the park was clean but I had no urge to go into town.
I checked out your FReep page. It's even worse than I thought in SF.
Too bad, it WAS a beautiful town.
What is the purpose of the Board of Supervisors in San Fran??
