This lowly homo erectus has been managing on hotmail so I guess I'm free to wander... What exactly must I do to get ahold of these wonders for my own?

I pick up my email with Outlook Express. Never any problems. I sweep six mailboxes regularly with it--POP3 and IMAP.

Dammit, you'll all use IE like you're supposed to!

It's part of the OS!

And it's secure!

I've used T-bird for several months and have installed it for friends. It easily imports e-mail addresses etc. from Outlook or even lesser known mail progrms like Poco-mail. The spam filter is very effective and it works simply and effectively. Go for it.

Thunder Bird is great, as good a email client as Firefox is browser. I don't think it gets the same amout of promotion by word of mouth.

Firefox is the best thing in browsing to come along in a long time. I love it. Download the extensions to tweak it and your are set.

Thunder bird looks nice, but Outlook still is a better program.

I have been using Firefox for about three weeks. Not one pop-up during that time. As for Thunderbird, i don't have the patience to move everything from Outlook. If I keep getting junk mail, I may find the time to try it out.

I use outlook express when I remember to check my email now I haven't for about a week and I'm afraid.AVG scans each and every email for viruses but it takes forever and a day to do it.I know I'll start up my other PC and open outlook and forget about it for awhile.Ah the joys of having multiple PCs.

Don't use Outlook or Outlook Express. Keep the mail (Viruses, SPAM, Spyware, Trojans, etc...) off of your computer completely by utlizing a web-based e-mail service.

I use Thunderbird & have had no problems. I didn't like the 'Mozilla suite' as a whole entity, for some reason I've forgotten, but as separate components I use & enjoy both Firefox & Thunderbird.

I've just switched to Firefox, after having problems (probably unnecessary ones) with earlier versions. I'm very satisfied with Firefox now. For those worried about taking the plunge, or who may have had problems like I did, here are a few things you should know about. If these tips don't work for you, don't ask me for help. All I know is that to get it working, you'll probably need some of this information. This is what worked for me:

After you download and install Firefox, don't try to use it immediately! Don't even try to access any of the menus. You may experience program freezes, your computer may hang, and you may even need to reboot. (All of that happened to me, but it's easily avoidable.)

The very first thing you should do, after installation, is create a new "User Profile" (I assume this is so that Firefox doesn't have to share such files with your other browser). This website tells you what you need to know:
How To Manage Profiles. Follow those instructions, then start up Firefox again and use it fearlessly. It should run just fine. I wish I knew about this "User Profile" stuff months ago. I also wish that the installation routine took care of it for you, but alas, it's something you'll just have to do for yourself. (If it is an installation option, I must have missed it.)

Next, you'll want to import your bookmarks. Under the "File" menu you'll see "Import" as one of the options. Do what it says. Once you have your old bookmarks imported into Firefox, you can re-arrange them as you like by going to the "Bookmarks" menu and selecting the "Manage Bookmarks" option. It took me a while to move them all out of the unnecessary "Imported from Mozilla" directory that the import process creates, but that's how I prefer it.

Now visit the "Tools" menu and select "Options." Visit all of the locations listed (as silly icons) along the right side of the "Options" window. This is where you set the browser to block popups, use tabs, etc.

That's pretty much all you need to do. Everything else (themes, etc.) may be interesting, but none of that is required. However, you may consider these additional items:

If Adobe Reader doesn't work when you're visiting a PDF site, the solution is here: Firefox's support forum's info about Adobe.

Finally, if you want to speed things up, visit this FreeRepublic thread and do what the lead article suggests. It helps a bit.
How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity).
