Russia has 25% tariffs on imported cars, this is going to be the 6th & 7th auto plants to open in 5 years since tariffs went in. Before that there was not a single plant openning. Go figure.

Nissan and Toyota will make 8 and 9.

Toyota alone has 14 plants in America, and they're building more.

Yes they are and who do we have to thank for that? Why Ronald Reagan and his import quotas. Hmmm, could there be a connection?

Who we have to thank for that is smart thinking by Toyota and the other Japanese auto-makers. For large objects like cars manufacturing closer to where your selling is more profitable. Shipping thousands and thousands of cars across the Pacific gets really expensive.

Really? Funny it didn't happen until AFTER Reagan's import quotas came into affect. Ditto for the German manufacturers. Same for Russia, nothing happened until AFTER the tariffs were in place.

They were still working on their penetration of the market pre-Reagan. They weren't running into any economy of scale issues until the mid to late 80s.

They better watch it. Putin can use those plants at a later time.

For what? Unlike China, Russia is not a facist, one party rule. That's like telling the Germans, better watchout building a BMW plant in the US, Bush might grab it.

First, how many cargo ships actually sink, second: there's insurance to take care of that.

There is no correlation between Bush and Putin. We have two different countries and political systems. Putin has WAY more power than Bush has in contrast to civil rights and private property rights. Only a fool would put millions of dollars into Russia without a quick return of profit.

An exception only upholds the rule. A rare exception and not the reason to build factories in America. The reason was a barrier to the market that could be avoided with a factory in the US.

Well with a 7% growing economy, a 6-7% growth rate in Industry, Moody's rating as the most stable market to invest in, there are plenty of "fools" then. It was a debt ratio of .3 to 1 and a rather stable government.

Everyone I know who's invested since the IMF/Yeltsin financial crash of '98, has been happy. Things change, just like we might soon be loosing our AAA rating to a AA rating, thanks to the $2.5 billion a day unsustainable debt issue our government loves. On top of this is a $1 trillion Social Security reform (the whole system is a joke and was a flat out lie from day one), the Assylum that's not an Assylum and the removal of all textile protections in 2005.

I respect what you are saying but I still persist that Putin is not to be trusted.

Yes there is growth- but they are coming from a rating that is slightly above impoverished. There was growth also in post WWII Germany and Japan but we had a lock on them and they knew not to be stupid. By Putin using the tariff to stimulate industrial growth in his country we are feeding a problem. As you said they are stable for now. However Putin has far too much power to build industrial plants in that country. We have not learned from China and the same mistake is being made.

Ehh? He doesn't have much more power then Chirac or Berlusconi, hell look at the power Blair has, Blair who's been in power for some 11 years now.

Article 90
1.The President of the Russian Federation shall issue decrees and executive orders.

2.The decrees and orders of the President of the Russian Federation shall be binding throughout the territory of the Russian Federation.

Article 91.
The President of the Russian Federation shall possess immunity.

He is supposed to serve two terms. If he steps down I'll eat the whole humble pie and tell my broker to put some money over there ASAP. If he pulls an Adolph, then nnnyyyaaahhhhh nnnnyyyaaahhhhh nnnnyyyaaaahhhh. Just kidding- love reading your posts.

Get serious.

"Shipping cars across the ocean" is done this very day, by Volkswagen, Jaguar, and a number of other automakers. The cost of shipping is almost negligible; in fact, until Ron Reagan, the Japanese were doing it AND price-gouging.

Until Reagan made it clear that he was adamant about "America First" none of those guys needed plants here.
