I am a member of the Audubon Society and I big hawk lover. Nevertheless, red-tailed hawks are far from being endangered.

Yes, but how many hawks get a chance to poot on angry Manhattan-ites? It turned them against each other, and in my mind, that is a good thing.

PS - It is ironic that the same people who want to set aside millions of acres in the West for critters, or stop a dam project for a minnow, would fight amongst themselves over the little postage stamp of turf claimed by the hawks. I say we should pass a bill in Congress to reintroduce all the species that once populated Manhattan, before the humans arrived and paved it. Make tax dollars contingent on the species' continued propogation.

As my father says, "One's affinity for large predators varies proportionally with distance..."

He lives out west in mountain lion country in Washington state. Every year the citizens of Seattle pass more rules protecting the mountain lions and making it impossible to control them. He is trying to arrange a "catch and release" program that will let the mountain lions go at the base of the Space Needle in downtown Seattle, which will change the opinions of the city dwellers in a 'right quick.

That's my take: NIMBY rich liberals. . . who scream the loudest about global warming, etcetera.
