Blunkett quits as home secretary

David Blunkett has quit as home secretary following a string of newspaper claims that he fast-tracked a visa for his ex-lover's nanny.

Wait a minute. His ex-lover's nanny? How old was his ex-lover?

Although I have never heard of Blunkett or his story, it does sound like he is a real sleaze.

that said, i think very few brits would have any sympathy with a serb nationalist/'pan-christian' veiwpoint - we don't condider people who starve cities and rape old women to be christian, regardless of what they do on a sunday morning.

We have to realise that the events in the Balkans were a series of civil wars, and like all such wars all sides did many pretty ghastly things. I have seen nothing to suggest that the Serbs were worse than the Bosnian Muslims, the Croats, or the Albanians; yet they seem to have been uniquely tarred in the western imagination.

I'm not necessarily into a pan-Christian viewpoint, but when if I hear daily reports of monasteries being burned or cemeteries defiled (all under the watchful eye of NATO or the E.U.), it becomes more understandable that a group who have viewed themselves as victims for centuries seek defence through attack.

I am guessing that the tone here is at least in part tongue in cheek, but if we're going to get into the game of who started what we'll end up several centuries ago blaming it all on an ethnic group which no longer exists.

i'd suggest some kind of history book for christmas, however much you may wish to discuss the wisdom of balkans policy in the west of the last 15 years your poiints are not aided by a demonstratable lack of knowledge of the history of the second world war, it rather destroys your credibility.

i'm afraid we will have to disagree on this issue.

i'm not going to use the 'i was there, i'm the one who knows argument' because its not fair. the evidence is widely available in the many books and films on the shelves.

i am fully aware of what the croats did to the serbs, and what the bosnians did to themselves to get western sympathy, but i was stationed in tuzla and banja for the best part of a year, and i know what i saw. the smoke was not from communal barbeques.

and it is true, we were talking about blunkett and ID cards, and he comes along going on about serbs and lots of other unrelated waffle - so he did start it.
