Police: School Bus Camera Catches Mom Beating Student
Local10 ^ | Dec 15, 2004

A Lake County mom was arrested after a camera on a school bus caught her beating a student who had gotten into a fight on a school bus, police said.

The camera shows three girls throwing punches at the back of the bus as a woman in a white shirt, Rita Gooden, walks back.

The camera shows Gooden push one girl out of the way, then strike another girl. The child appears to be pinned to a back seat out of view of the camera as the apparent beating continues.

Gooden is charged with simple battery, and she faces up to a year behind bars.

And the significance of this in an international forum is exactly what?
Never mind that there is no clue what state this is in.

I told my fiance that if some stranger who was a woman hit her and couldn't easily be restrained, I would hit the lady back.

When it comes to protecting your loved ones, chivalry goes out the window.

Now I don't know if it was necessary to hit a little girl that can be restrained otherwise, but I've seen some pretty big girls out there.

Are you daft? Questioning the significance of such events endangers the entire American economy. Without crappy news and silly sitcoms major advertising outlets will cease to exist.

The law allows you to use force sufficient to defend another.

Obviously, the student beating this woman's child wasn't listening to reasoning. The mom pushed her child out of the way, but if the bully continued to lunge at the victim, the woman had the right to use the force needed to defend her child.

A lot of details missing here: kids' age, was the "assaulting" mom's daughter ganged up on, did the "assaulted" kid strike the mom first, what was the degree of injury sustained by the "assaulted" kid, where was the bus driver, what is the school's policy for supervising kids on the bus or breaking up fights, etc.?

Also, is this an internatinal incident? If not, TC, why is it being posted here in an "international" forum? ;)

When we were kids and we were acting up, it didn't matter who started what and who was responsible. If momma had to get up from what she was doing she would take it out on ALL of us. Never mind waiting for "your father to get home". Momma took care of business. And trying to run was an exercise in futility. Yes, you could run, but you couldn't run forever...

Hmmmmm.... Black woman beats up a white kid much smaller than her daughter. Mother walks off the bus laughing and saying "one more time"....

Not a hate crime.

And the significance of this in an international forum is exactly what?

It touches on the following: homeschool/public school debate, school vouchers, mainstream media bias, and parental discipline, all of which are routinely debated on this forum.

Unfortunately, the story is so poorly written that it is hard to figure out whether the mother was right or wrong in her actions.

Where'd you get all that info? This article is sadly lacking much relevant information.

It almost looks like when the girls weren't doing a good enough job of beating up the girl, the momma stepped in to show 'em how it's done (though that part isn't actually shown on the video I watched).

That is what I saw also, the mom didn't think her daughter and another girl were doing a good enough job.

Why was a mother on the school bus? I rode the bus for eight years, and never once saw an adult besides the driver.
